Red Cone OHV Loop is a 10.9 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Jefferson, Colorado that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for ohv/off road driving.
This route takes you to the top of Red Cone mountain, descending to Webster Pass, then out to the south via Handcart Gulch Road.
Red Cone is always fun. The trail changes slightly every year. There was some good snow drifts near the top that required us to bust through them. I would expect it to be covered in snow now. Make sure you know it’s one way if you go from the summit down to Webster Pass due to the steepness and shale rocks. Enjoy.
Fun, fun, fun. Air down your tires, your back will thank you later. 2 obstacles, one of which i scraped under skid plate. Go with someone, don’t do i by your self. 2019 JLRU stock.
fun loop. a couple of tougher obstacles on the way up going clockwise, but otherwise rocky and uneven at most. definitely a narrow trail. once above treeline the views are incredible. stop and take it in once in a while. descent is fast but enjoyable. awesome day and awesome trail. I drove it on a 17 Rubicon for the most part as delivered. scraped a couple of times. likely bad lines but definitely doable for most keeps with skid plates.
Did Red Cone today in a 2014 JK Sahara with a 3.5 in. lift and 35 in. BFGs. No problem. Rocky ascent, scraped a couple times but not bad. A little snow at the top, mostly slushy in a few spots. Great trail, spectacular views. Will definitely ride it again.
We ran this trail in my 2011 4Runner w/ 2” lift and 31.6” tires. I feel like the descent is a little over-hyped, I didn’t feel my anxiety level go up at all as we went down. I did scrape pretty good at the gatekeeper and on a few boulders in the rock garden; rock sliders and skid plates are a beautiful thing. One of the last switchbacks was a pretty decent challenge as well, I watched another vehicle struggle through it for a while but I pulled right through, I think I found the right line.
Entire loop was open. A few Rock obstacles to clear but did it with a stock Rubi. Great views and overall good drive
Drove in as far as we could and did a nice 4.7 mile snow shoe.
Excellent trail! Probably not "difficult" but that is all relative I suppose. We had no problems with the decent, however the rock garden was a bit more challenging for our stock wrangler on 33's. A couple inch lift would have made this so much fun. We aired down quite a bit more than needed, 25psi would have been fine and left us with more ground clearance. Views were amazing and the trees are starting to change color. Definitely will do this one again next summer!
Where the loop and pass is closed to auto currently, 90% or more of the trail is accessible by foot. The approach to Webster Pass is blocked by a decent sized cornice just a measly 50 meters from the top. Backed down another 100 meters and scrambled up to the top of the pass. Not recommended, but doable.
