Really nice hike because it was cloudy, but parts of the first few miles are pretty exposed. Admittedly, we didn't get too far on the trail!

Wandered around the burn scar in search of morels. No luck, but a beautiful day in the woods!

Backpacking

Started at the Bear Creek trailhead on 5/16 and took Columbine up to the Rainbow Trail. Walked South until we hit the Hunt's Lake trail intersection and took that up about halfway and camped there overnight. Didn't see any snow until about 10,000 ft. We found a campsite that had been previously used and was flat off of Hunt's Lake trail, but there aren't many so keep your eye out. The next morning we hiked up the rest of the way to Hunt's Lake - the last 0.5 miles was a scramble straight up the rocks and ice but we made it. Lake is still frozen right now. Best way to get down is to slide down on your butt! So fun! Hiked back the way we came on the Rainbow Trail but took the road to the trailhead this time to cut some mileage. Nice hike, lots of water right now and very few people on the trail. We did see a few motorbikes though so be careful when you hear them coming - they didn't slow down at all around the corners. Think we ended up somewhere around 27 miles in total & about 6,000ft in elevation gain. Would recommend especially this time of year!

This trail is gorgeous and I’m so excited to see it in the summer! I went Sunday April 19 and the first part of the trail was great. About a mile in, started hitting some snow but kept going. At 1.4 miles i had to turn around—there was just too much snow to keep going. Overall, gorgeous trail and beautiful day!

Hiking

The pluses with this hike are beautiful wildflowers, views, close to Salida, easy to get to, well marked trails, shaded in places, and only moderately hard. It took only 4 hours round trip (6 miles). The minuses were, no streams, rivers or waterfalls , WAY too many mountain bikers and although they were all very polite and shared the trail , we were constantly having to jump off the trail to allow them to get by. It was very nerve wracking and a couple of close calls. Also, motor dirt bikes are allowed on the trail, and the first mile of the hike you could see and hear route 285 down below. Soo based on my comments, I probably wouldn’t hike it a second time but if you are an experienced mountain biker , have at it!! And enjoy your ride !!!!

My hike today 6.8.2019 was supposed to be Silver Creek. When I arrived at the trailhead for SC I saw the Rainbow sign as well. I thought they were the same thing. So I hiked east on the trail towards 285. This section is 10 miles. It's a great trail. The next time I hike I will catch the Rainbow TH on 285. The dirty road to get to Silver Creek was difficult in my low clearance car. Rainbow trail is on the East and West side of 285. The section I did is 10 miles from 285 going west. Quiet. A few runners. a few mountain bikers.

plus the extra 50 miles or so that goes South almost to the Huerfano county line.

Hiked up to the aspen forest about 2.5 miles up the trail. Great views! Was a beautiful hike and only saw 2 groups of 3 on a Sunday morning. I lucked out on not seeing mountain bikers or crowds!
