Ride 2.5 miles up the Pass Trail from Coal Bank Pass until you reach the Engineer Mtn Trail. If you want, ditch your bike here and take a quick scramble to the summit of Engineer Mtn. Return to your bike for a 6 mile, nearly 4000 foot descent to the trailhead near Cascade Creek and highway 550.

Great first hike for flat-landers. The hike did kick my butt--glad we brought enough water. Beautiful views of alpine meadows, ponds, and vistas.

Some mud. Many bikes on 4th of July weekend. Start early for solitude.

Got up super early. TH at 6:30 and at 49 degrees. Mostly cloudy. Wildflowers were popping. Breath taking views. 2l of water was fine for a cool day. The incline up was pretty mellow and the trail is well maintained. Once up in the meadow, took a left. Went further than expected. Found out trail will take you down to Cascade Creek.

Pass Trail is the most popular route - Hike or Bike - up to the Meadows near the Junction of the Pass and Engineer Mountain Trails (and the scramble to the Summit of Engineer Mountain). There is substantial Parking a short way in along a Dirt Road across from and just a bit North of the Coal Bank Pass Pullout (with its Bathroom facilities) - but even this can get a bit crowded on good Summer Weekends. The first 2/3rds of the Trail is Tree-covered good-quality Single-track (with a few Snowbanks tucked alongside the Trail lasting well into June). The last 1/3rd traverses Open Meadows bathed in Wildflowers throughout most of the Summer and even into Autumn. The views from this upper portion include Engineer and Grand Turk and Sultan Mountains plus Snowdon and Twilight and even peeks of the West Needle Mountains across the other side of the Lime Creek drainage. If one still has Time and Energy, Pass Trail can be included as part of several different Loop or Shuttle Hikes.

The ride starts with a steep and fairly technical climb up the Pass Trail to the Engineer Mtn Trail. From here, you can ditch your bike for the quick scramble up to the summit of Engineer Mtn. Next, you have 6 miles and almost 4000 vertical feet of awesome single track downhill. You can also link this ride up with the Colorado Trail from Molas Pass for a long and beautiful ride almost entirely above treeline.
