Beautiful trail. Heavy use. Stream cross x 3. Gorgeous area around the lake to take in the magnificent views. Lots of mockingbirds! So cute and sweet!

The trail was amazingly beautiful. Aspen trees still had some color to them. Trail is well maintained. If you aren’t use to evaluation and hiking you might want to bring your asking sticks some places had a pretty good incline but not to bad. The lake was so beautiful and worth the 3 miles round trip hike!

Beautiful hike through the forest, shaded most of the way. We clocked 3 miles, pretty steep climb up! If you are not used to elevation you may need to stop frequently!

This easily became my new favorite hike in Pagosa Springs! Every view is absolutely stunning and the hike itself fairly easy. We were lucky enough to see it in peak foliage this year. Highly recommended!!

Absolutely gorgeous trail. The aspens are stunning right now (1st WK of October) and the views are jaw dropping. We hiked with kids(little and big) and had no problems or whining!

Worth the hike. Drive up is easy on well maintained dirt roads. My Apple Watch clocked this hike at just under 3 miles round trip. First mile can get steep at times. Just under 500 ft elevation change.

The first half is uphill, but not too difficult. We were looking for a pleasant hike to enjoy the fall colors, and this was perfect!

The description of this trail is 100% accurate. It is a short hike to the lake but as AllTrails & others describe the first half or so is pretty steep & I wouldn’t necessarily rate as easy for those maybe less able or with health issues, definitely suggest taking your time & stopping at the natural breaks in the path to catch your breath. Once you are up, it is a short walk to the pretty Opal Lake & it’s a lovely place to stop & enjoy being in the mountains. Only issue is the popularity of this short hike means it can get crowded round the lake shore and surrounding slopes. We hiked this one with our dog but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend as the best for dogs due to the traffic on the narrow trail & at the lake. Perfect on a quiet day I’d say ;)

Beautiful lake, well worth the hike. It is a little steep 3/4 the way up. But they did a good job of using switchbacks so that it is not straight up. Sadly, there are too many places that lazy or uneducated hikers chose to bypass the switchbacks causing erosion and damage to the area. Stunning views of the surrounding mountains once at the lake. Also saw many geese and ducks enjoying the lake.
