Shanahan Trail can be taken to either the North Fork or South Fork of the Shanahan through ponderosa pine savannah. Both trails intersect with the Mesa Trail. Bear Canyon Trail also accesses the Mesa Trail through the NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) property. Loop trail: take North Fork Shanahan, turn south on Mesa, east at South Fork Shanahan, north to North Fork Shanahan. Alternate: cross Mesa and continue up to the flatiron. Turn north to Fern Canyon. East to Mesa, south on Mesa to North Fork, east to the beginning.

Easy access for a quick mellow hike. A lot of the trail is pretty smooth making it good for trail running too. Would also be a great hike for kids. From this location there are a lot of options for different loops or connections to the Mesa trail.

Really great trail!! Beautiful views!! Dogs can be off leash if they have a Boulder voice and sight program tag!! Nice mix
Of shade and sun!! Lots of offshoot trails if you want to make it a longer hike. Just awesome!!!

An easy, well maintained trail close to boulder. There were very few people hiking today and no mountain biking allowed, which is a nice change. Hiked almost 7.5 miles today. There are many options for distance and scenery depending on which of the many intersecting trails you decide to take. Started at the trailhead by homestead trail.

This is an easy hike. Mostly shaded. Nice wide trail. Leads to Mesa trail. Not much in terms of views but great for a quick hot day jaunt through the woods. Don't think I'd do it again ..

The elevation on this trail makes it more moderate in my opinion. Distance isn't far but it's a steep-ish grade. Beautiful and a great hike all the same.

Nice, short, and refreshing mid day hike with scenic views. Once on the trail, or after you get to the end point, you have the option to merge off onto other trails if you want to extend your hike.
