Although this hike is mostly in Indian Peaks Wilderness (Roosevelt National Forest), it starts in Lake Brainard Recreation Area. There is a $11 fee (cash only) to enter this area. From mid-October to mid-May, the road into Lake Brainard Recreation Area is closed. Visitors may park at the Gateway Trailhead, just outside of the closed gate. Parking at this trailhead adds 5 miles round-trip to the hike. Visitors starting from Gateway Trailhead do not need to pay the fee as they are starting outside of the park.

Beautiful and Eerie... via airplane gully

Had a blast hiking up Navajo Peak! Left at 6am on Labor Day and only passed about 6 people until I got up to no name lake. From here the hike gets much tougher as you leave the trail and start scrambling up towards the airplane chute. Past this point I only saw one person and that wasn’t until I reached the top a couple hours later. All in all a really fun and challenging hike, and a great one for those wanting to avoid large weekend crowds.

Not as hard as it looks, the most technical part is the airplane shoot since there is still snow melting

After you pass the last little un-named lake below the glacier, the trail mostly disappers and you're solidly in cairn territory.

Super fun hike with a little scrambling, highly recommend checking some of the more detailed trip reports/guides out there before heading out!

Edit: Should add that we did this back in August, it's a bit more technical at the moment.
