Mount Lincoln Trail via Kite Lake Trail is a 5.5 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Fairplay, Colorado that features a lake and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and nature trips and is best used from June until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
NOTE: The peak of Mount Lincoln is private property. The owner has generously granted access to the peak, provided hikers stay on the designated trail, follow Leave No Trace principals, and avoid the summit of Bross. . Fee is $5 per vehicle.
I'm new to hiking in Colorado, so this was a bit lofty of a goal for me. My wife and I made it nearly to Mt. Cameron before it got too late in the day to continue. Being from Georgia and used to dense humid air, it was one of the hardest hikes I've ever done but absolutely the most worth it. Such a beautiful view from the top!!
Got to the trail at 6am on Saturday 9/19 and had to park on the road. People need to learn trail etiquette. Yield to descending traffic and if you are going to stop and take a break move off of the trail. No shade and the trail gets really narrow close to the summit. Overall an easy way to bag multiple 14ers in a day.
Doing Cameron and Lincoln is odd - I'd do Democrat and Bross too - not such a big difference honestly. They are easy 14ers, good place to start if you aren't in top shape or do not have much hiking/mountaineering experience. I did the DeCaLiBron along with Quandry in the morning, and had plenty of spare time. I'd suggest reading about the route on 14ers.com (although absolutely not needed for this one - it's a class 1 and the route is super obvious). If however you are visiting colorado, have limited days of hiking, and have experience - then skip this one (and this area). Sawatch range offers easy class 2 that are more challenging than this and with better view. San Juan and Elk offers really really really gorgeous views and technical/challenging peaks. Sangre de Cristo has a range of easy-ish to super hard. Pick your spot! (oh and front range is too spread apart if you want to limit driving around a bunch)
Lots of smoke - wind came in and it was beautiful! Challenging hike for sure!
definitely layer up, definitely start early. loved 90% of the hike, HATED the downhill from bross. it was fun until that downhill.
Best hike I’ve ever done in my life. Perfect workout without being too exhausting. Did Cameron on the way to Lincoln both of which are great peaks. Lots of people but not too many that it was a problem. Parked on the road and didn’t pay any fee. Even saw a mountain goat who got about 4 feet away from me! Highly recommend to anyone who wants to do a 14er
Got there around 8am, parking area was already backed up. Fee is $5(someone mentioned $3). It was such a nice weather to start with, but it started to storm around 2pm right after we were coming down from Lincoln. There was no snow at all, just no shades, super dry rocks/gravels trails. I am not sure why someone's complaining about this trail should be listed as hard(and it is listed as hard), but no 14ers is easy compare to any regular hikes so you need to do some research about the trail before you heard out there. I'm giving this trail 4 stars because at the Mt. Cameron was just a big flat space and nothing is marked. (I downloaded a map so I knew where I was but it was bit boring) 07/03/2020 #29
