Rocky climb up narrow picturesque canyon. From Ouray, this is the quickest and most direct way to the Alpine Loop and Engineer Pass, but it is also the most difficult. Road climbs up scenic narrow canyon and accesses Poughkeepsie Gulch and Mineral Point. Hidden waterfalls at Poughkeepsie entrance. This popular trail has limited parking at start and can get quite congested on busy weekends. Located in Uncompahgre National Forest and on BLM land. For current conditions call the Ouray Ranger District (970) 240-5300. In the summer, call the San Juan Mountain Center in Silverton at (970) 387-5530. Difficult, but just barely so. Rocky and steep in places, especially at the beginning. Stock 4WD SUVs can do it with careful tire placement and patience. No room to pass along one stretch of narrow ledge road. High clearance, low range and skid plates recommended. Some offroad driving experience is helpful.

Miles and miles of big rocks. High clearance and low range is simply a given. At times in the Jeep we found ourselves leaned sideways enough to have at least one passenger end up crawled up on top of another lol. Maybe having to do that while edging along near cliffs at times was a bit much. It was raining and all those rocks were slippery so that might have caused some of the worry too. This is a trail where parts can get broke. We saw one blown tire and one totaled ATV. Although this trail isn't famous like some others, I would say it's very memorable!! We really can't say there was anything about this trail we would want to see again if we weren't going to Poughkeepsie.

Twice through in a 2017 Ford Raptor. Some fun/tricky spots. You definitely want a high clearance 4x4 for this trail.
