Directions from Eagle: Go 18 miles east on I-70 to the Edwards exit. Go south on Highway 6, then turn west . Go 0.7 mile and turn right onto Lake Creek Road, at the National Forest Access sign. Travel 1.8 miles and turn right onto West Lake Creek Road. Be sure to stay on West Lake Creek Road as it winds through a residential area. Follow to Forest Road 423, a rough, rutted 4-wheel drive road and take it 3.2 miles until it deadends at Baryeta Cabins site. There is limited parking at the turnaround and that is the only parking available. The trail begins across West Lake Creek at the end of the road. There are no facilities at the trailhead. Those not wanting to drive the very rough Road 423, can park at the bottom and walk the 3.2 miles to the Baryeta Cabins site. Mountain bikers using the Bareyta Cabins Road are reminded that bikes are not permitted on trails through the Wilderness.

Amazing, my miniature poodles and I were the only ones on this trail. Granted, driving the 4WD road was a killer to get to the trailhead, but it’s way better than hiking it. You’re immediately in the wilderness, on steep switchbacks up. It’s worth the effort when you reach the ‘pass,’ before the trail descends to the lake. We went up off trail, to get photos of the Gore Range, Holy Cross and all glory!

WARNING: the trail marker that identifies a very important right turn is no longer there (see picture). Although there are amazing views if you continue straight, it will not take you to middle lake.

Really beautiful trail, never ended up making it all the way to middle lake due to going the wrong direction, but absolutely peaceful and secluded. The first two miles are practically straight up hill, and it's not any easier going down so keep that in mind.

Definitely a "Hard" trail but would absolutely do again, and perhaps the next time I'll actually make it all the way to Middle Lake :/

This is an extremely difficult trail. Elevation gain is about 2k ft in first 2 miles. Be ready to go up!! Well worth the effort as if you make it to the ridge (see pic where all four of us are together) then you did the hard part. The lake is still about another hour down, but the bulk of the tough hiking is over. The fishing is great, and you are so secluded it is amazing!
