Getting There

As of May 27, 2020, users have reported that Part of the figure eight is closed off for revegetation. Please see the park's website for up to date information. This candy wrapper style loop trail will take you past 2 small waterfalls and Upper Maxwell Falls if you do the whole loop. This forested trail has two trail head options with a loop in the middle. This information is from the lower trail head parking lot. From the lower trailhead the distance to Upper Maxwell Falls is about 2 miles. From the lower trailhead after crossing the foot bridge stay to the left and follow the signs and the river upwards to go directly to Upper Maxwell Falls or go right to go up Cliff Loop Trail which will meet back with Maxwell Falls trail just above the falls. If you take Maxwell Falls trail first the falls will be two miles up on the left and down. Just listen for the water getting louder and keep an eye out. It's a bit hidden. You can turn back from here or continue past the falls a short way to find the Cliff Loop Trail on the right. This will take you back around to the foot bridge. Or you can go the opposite way, taking Cliff Loop Trail from the foot bridge and coming back down Maxwell Falls Trail. You will see one very small falls a bit lower on Maxwell Falls Trail and another on Cliff Trail near the foot bridge.

There is a good sized parking lot with no restrooms, no water and no trash cans. Please pack out your trash and dog waste. Dogs are required to be kept on a leash.

Colorado Tourism Office, 1625 Broadway, Suite 1700 , Denver, CO, 80202, Phone: 800-COLORADO

Directions from Evergreen for lower trail head: Take Highway 74 to the center of Evergreen. Turn right at the stoplight onto Highway 73. Go to Brook Forest Rd. and turn right. The lower trail head is encountered first on the left just past Columbine Road To access the upper trail head go past the lower trail head to Black Mountain Road. On Black Mountain Road turn left and go 1.25 miles to the upper trail head.

Not a secluded trail- hiking with what feels like 500 people... waiting in line to see a trickle of a waterfall. Not great.

Got there around 1, took around 4 hours out and back. The falls are pretty dense right now but my pup enjoyed the hike.

Very crowded. Trash and dog poop throughout the hike. Not much to see at the actual waterfall. The area has obviously been overused and disrespected. Eroded trails with lots of braiding. What a shame.

Don’t come here for the waterfall we could barely see it because of all the people. Very forestry and shaded hike and lots of hill to get your heart rate up.

Great trail! Lots of shade, chilly, and beautiful!! There are lots of little trails off the main loop, but it helps to record your walk to keep you on track. We ended up taking the upper trail and navigated back on to the loop. Great hike, I would do it again with my dog.

If you want a relaxing, quiet trail this is not it! The trail was ridiculously overcrowded, there is almost no parking and the “waterfalls” aren’t much more than a trickle. People seem to think that no trash service at the trail head means they should just toss their garbage anywhere. Super disappointing.

This used to be a gorgeous trail but is now crowded and cluttered with litter and dog poo. The parking is horrendous as it is so over-crowded and people are wandering on the very busy road. And forget social distancing or people wearing masks.

Super pretty and fun hike. A nice moderate hike with good terrain. Great for avid and new hikers. Nice wide trail perfect for social distancing. Trail is mostly shaded which is nice. Parking is limited so get their early. The waterfall was pretty and worth the hike. Felt like I was all the way tucked in the mountains. Definitely will be back to do this hike again.

Maxwell Falls is very overcrowded on any given day. Dogs without leashes, trash and dog feces abound. Parking is VERY limited. Was a great hiking area but now totally over used and crowded.

Great popular day trail that offers plenty of shade throughout. Make sure to start early to guarantee a parking spot and to avoid the crowds. Do not expect a rushing waterfall- it’s currently a glorified stream but worth seeing. Note: this is a trash free trail and there are no trail bathrooms or garbage receptacles available. Pack it in and pack it out!! Remember to bring a trash bag to carry your disposed waste in.

Overused and overrated! This is not the quiet getaway you are looking to enjoy with your family. For the last decade or so this trail has been consistently overused and is degrading day by day. Parking is scarce and dangerous Dog owners let their pets run off-leash and fail to clean up their waste Visitors leave trasn and trash the tails and fauna. And for what... the falls are a joke. Totally disappointing compared to other sites in the state.

Pretty busy during the afternoon. Cliff Loop closed for the return side, have to go in and out the same way. Visited in July, and the waterfall is pretty much dry. Very beautiful scenery, though, would be even better in the Spring with more run-off.

It would be a nice hike if there weren't so many people, dogs off-leash, poo bags left everywhere, and over-loved trails. The parking is mostly along a busy street and limited. This trail is way overrated.

Maxwell Falls is dangerously crowded these days. There is very limited parking and if you are over the white line at all, Jeffco will slap you with an expensive parking ticket. if you are close to a wheels width over the line, you will be towed. The Jeffco towing yard is in Commerce City. There are a lot of dogs off leash and people don't clean up after them or leave the poop bags on the trail. There is no poop fairy to take them to the trash. Yes, it's beautiful but no longer quiet.

The waterfall is trickling ....so it's just a trek through some rolling hills with nice surroundings.

What a lovely hike , but so incredibly disappointing to see all the bags of dog poop along the trail. Pack your poop with you along the way, it's seriously not OK to "come back for it"

Where are the falls? Hiked this trail today (6/29/20) and it's the first time there was no waterfall, only water at the bottom. Wildflowers are not in their usual full display. But it's still a beautiful place.

Nice, pleasant trail that’s great for taking your family. A little underwhelming, but it’s always good to get out for a nice hike. Highly recommended.
