BackpackingGreat!No shade

Loved this trail! The first bit was not shaded as other reviews stated so it was a bit hot for sure. Other than that it was great. The lake was gorgeous! Will definitely be back for this one!

Mountain bikingGreat!

I took my boys, 10 and 12, mountain biking on this trail. The bike up the ridge was a challenge for them and it took us a little while. They were done halfway to the lake so we turned around. Loved the ride back down. This trail is appropriately rated for older kids/adults. I really liked it and will return myself to ride all the way to the lake.

It could’ve been a little shorter in my husbands eyes, but the lake was as serene and peaceful as it could’ve been ~ truly beautiful!! Go in the morning as it gets hot and crowded by noonish.

RunningGreat!

Good for trail running or an easy hike. Walk around to the other side of the lake for beautiful views of the Gore Range. The trail is easy to follow and was not busy (on a Thurs). There are a lot of downed trees and not many wildflowers.

The lake is really beautiful and fun to explore around. The hike has its pretty features ana has its “lets just get through this part” aspect. You’ll know when your walking through that area. Beatle kill I think, so better to start off in the morning and be through the shadeless party before the hottest part of the day (11-3.. I would start no later then 9/9:30) I’m glad we did this and will likely mountain bike it next but for hiking I suggest heading to piney lake, exploring around there and checking out the Piney Falls Trail just over the ridge

Very hot, not a lot of shade for dogs. They cleared a lot of the trees. Just be careful with the pups! Other than that, great hike. Pretty views. Perfect distance for families

Great for what it is — relatively flat but longer hike. The lake is truly beautiful. Gave it 4 stars since it’s a pain to get to and the hike itself is kind of boring; also fairly crowded even mid-day on a weekday. For the same amount of time — if looking for an acclimatization hike, I might suggest something harder but shorter and closer and just going slowly.

Very nice and easy hike. Awesome views. Watch out fir ticks , we wanted to sit on the logs by the lake but had an interesting amount of ticks. Definitely not a deterrent but watch your clothing

Great!

Absolutely breathtaking! The lake water wasn't cold at all, we even took a little dip. Trail was mostly shaded, and definitely a good first of the year hike. Long but not too long. Watch out for bikers also. I would suggest going as early as you can. we left at 8 and got to the lake in about 2.5 hours (and that's stopping for breaks and carrying backpacks). On the way out, we got to the parking lot around 1030 and it was slammed packed. Would definitely do this hike again!!

We enjoyed this trail as it was a relatively easy roundtrip. It took us (two adults and an 11 year old) an hour and a half to get to the lake and roughly an hour to return to the parking lot. (In fairness, we were walking fast on the way back because we started late.) We stayed for 30 minutes to eat lunch and the lake was pretty. There is one steep hill on the return but the rest of the hike is a gentler climb. Temperature was great but it might get a little hot in full sun because part of the hike is through logged forest. I am rating this as a 3 because we have been on prettier, more spectacular trails near Vail Pass, but this was worth doing particularly as an 'easy' hike.

Amazing hike! If you are only in Colorado for a short time this is a great trail to chose. There are only a couple steep parts and lake is absolutely stunning! I took about 3 hours round trip not including the time we spent at the lake. Also the drive to the trail head is gorgeous!

Hiking

Great hike! First of all the dirt road is pretty smooth for a dirt road. I wouldn’t take my Lamborghini on it, but almost any car can make it. Most of the bumpier spots were in the first climb up. The trailhead has about 10 or more formal spaces, more than enough for our midweek hike. The trail has mostly a moderate grade climbing along the top of the ridge initially through forest and wild flowers. It the opens up in a clear cut area. The clear cut is kind of sad, but it gives wide open views of Vail ski area and Mount of the Holy Cross. It then winds up and down through green forest before reaching the lake. There were a couple short steeper grade areas. Reaching the lake, don’t get suckered into stopping early! Go to the far side of the lake where you will find a log pier and amazing views back over the trees of snowy rocky peaks. You’ll be glad you went to the pier. It’s also quieter. The trail was closer to 7.6 as the Alltrails map doesn’t follow the trail exactly.

Beautiful the entire hike! Hiked on a Wednesday so there were very few people on the trail. Took fishing poles for kiddos. Didn’t see or catch any fish but spent two hours at the lake just relaxing. With a five and nine year old, took us 4 hours to hike the whole thing. So worth it! Road in the way up is horrid. Keep going. It’s great.

Lovely out and back end up at Lost Lake - open walk along a ridge line (got hot), gorgeous views everywhere. walk around the far side of lake to see incredible views. Very little elevation gain, wasn’t very crowded which was great on a holiday weekend. Took longer than it says here. 3.5 hrs instead of 2.5 but we did stop to take pics and had a quick bite along the way. Really nice

Was a great and easy hike to do. We got there around 9 AM and there were only two cars in the lot, when we got back around 12 or 1, it was completely full and the road was super busy. Beautiful lake at the end, great views of the mountains all the way up to the lake. Nice to hike through the woods and the open fields intermittently. The lake pops up out of nowhere at the end, which is a fun surprise. Also, we brought my roommate’s dog, who had no issues with the dirt and rocks on the way there, but by the time the sun was high in the sky and there was minimal shade, he was having issues with how hot the ground was on his feet. If you’re concerned about it, consider foot pads for the pup

Nice Sunday stroll. Great weather, flowers. Easy 6.6 miles in about 2:30. Lake is picturesque. Strong recommend, no workout, just beautiful and relaxing.

Nice, fun out and back. I found the trail dry and in immaculate condition. I completed the round trip in about 3 hours. The lake itself is a lot smaller than I imagined but very quiet. I only encountered a few other hikers in route (and a mountain biker).

First off, the view and experience is worth the horrid road. DONT GO WITH A LOW CAR! It is wildly horrible and you will go slow. ITS WORTH IT! there is little / no protection from the sun, so wear sunscreen. the view of the Rockies is insane the entire trek. be sure you have water as it’s hot hot hot (it was today at least!). the hike was easy as there was little / no incline and it was a nice walk. You come upon the lake out of nowhere and the breathtaking. With that though, bring bug spray! ITS AMAZING!

The red dirt, single lane road up was somewhat scary and not in good shape. Would think twice about doing it again for that reason .But the hike itself was lovely - open stunning mountain views on the way out to the north and east. Vail mountain and Gore. Hike to pristine lake was worth it- especially for the dogs. Go early for less traffic and drive a four wheel drive vehicle to trail head!
