Most trails in this system are fairly easy, well-signed, and a nice hike. We’ve done 1&2, but today we hiked the 3.7 mile West Loop. Best start is to park at Junction Creek Rd milepost 5. The trail is right at the side (high) of the road.

Easy multi-use trail with lots of opportunities for solitude.

wonderful trail system. well signed along the way to help you explore the area. we hiked in early November, and the weather was perfect for a long day hike. dog friendly. shared the trail with MTN bikers and a few horses. great view from Animas Overlook.

I tried using map that downloaded for trails 1&2 the map is inaccurate. if not other people downloading maps we would have had trouble negotiating the trail.

Awesome hike! Note that the gate to this trail is only open between May and October. Perfect time of year for hike, just cooled down and the fall colors were coming out. Parts of the trail are well marked and easy to follow, others not so much. We did a little backtracking and guessing, but it's pretty close to the road where it gets confusing so not a big deal. Saw a few deer, which is rare for us with our noisy dogs! Only did Chutes 1 this time(5 Miles), but will go back and add in part of 2 next time.

Sept 10, 2017 9:00 am still hiking this trail.
Be cautious. At the cattail swampy area about 8200 ' walked up on a mom bear and her cub. Be safe.
I like this trail though. Keep an eye on the path as parts of it are not as worn.
