Wonderful family SUV trip This scenic ranchland and forest backroad is a great alternative to the paved drive between Ridgway and Telluride. You'll see abundant wildflowers through early summer, great fall color and stunning mountain views. Enjoy camping, hiking and mountain biking. Unlicensed vehicles are allowed on this road. Plan plenty of time to visit Telluride, a great summer destination. Be prepared for congestion in town during frequent special events. Information can be found at the visitor center on the west end of town. High Point 10,600 ft. Best time to go: Mid June-Sept. Located in Uncompahgre National Forest. For current conditions call Norwood Ranger District (970) 327-4261. Rutted dirt road suitable for high-clearance, 2-wheel-drive vehicles when dry. Slick clay can be impassable when wet even for 4-wheel-drive vehicles.

The best easy/moderate trail for factory 4x4 vehicles!

Nice drive. Used 4 low just to control speed on down hill but not necessary. Dry right now so little of the mud mentioned in previous years. Millions of aspen so expect it is amazing in September.

Very scenic with lots of wildflowers. Easy trail 90% of the way even in 1 ton SRW 2WD. One spot a few miles from the Telluride overlook was a little steep and rocky requiring staying on the brakes for a slow crawl down ~ 1 mile stretch. Really rough on a new brake job. At the cattleguard, beware the attack ptarmigan. Stopped to check it out standing in the road and it was all over me. Even wanted to get in the truck. It let me pick it up for some pics. Would be great in 4WD with low range or ATV/UTV for that 1 small spot.
