Once you get to about 10988 it because a lot harder then just Moderate (no marked trail). You are crawling and scrambling. Be careful even the bighorn sheep has issues. Found a dead one at the bottom of the snowfield (melted now) when i first tried this hike 7 years ago. Very stunning lake though.

Beautiful hike to smaller glacial lakes. Snow covered above 10,400 and hard to follow the trail. The rock scramble is snow covered 7/12/19 so can’t reach the upper lake safely without crampons and ice axe. You can get to the two smaller lakes which are partially snow covered but accessible with some post holing along the way.

Trail was flooded and hard to follow after getting off of the road, but we were able to find our campsite after a little bit of searching. We stayed at the Dutch Town backcountry site, then went up to the lake in the morning. The trail to the lake from our campsite was fairly snow covered, so we just followed the river into the boulder fields. The final part of the trail was completely snow covered and at a very steep incline. Traction is necessary, and an ice axe would have made the journey a lot easier. When you get past the snowfields, the final portion up to the lake has no snow and is relatively straightforward. Make sure to go earlier in the day to avoid any afternoon storms.

Trail was well kept until the last mile to the lake. Trail was not well marked and had to traverse rock field the entire time. But the view was worth it.

Beautiful hike, lots of mosquitos. Last portion of the trail doesn’t exist, you have to scramble up the boulder field to get to the lake. There were also a bunch of bighorn on the side of the mountain on the way up!
