Extremely long and mentally draining. Sure it’s only class 3 if you make absolutely no mistakes on your route-finding, otherwise, expect mostly class 4 with exposure. Took my partner and I almost 13 hours to complete.

10/12/19 This is a brutal climb that takes full commitment. People that are thinking of down climbing this after hitting the summit is bad decision. This is a clockwise hike leading to the summit. Down climbing is probably the most dangerous thing you can do, with even having rock climbing experience on this ridge. Route finding in the mix of snow after 13,000 was exhausting! I climbed with gloves and the boulder x sportiva- I gave up dry gortex boots for better grip, which lead to wet feet. I still prefer grip over winter mountain boots for this type of endeavor. Be safe and happy trails on this extreme scramble!

be warned this is not your tourist loop nor is there a trail after the peak all rock and down climbing. I dont know why this is on all trails as the portion after the peak requires rock climbing experience and route finding. Dont make the mistake I did and think there is trail its all jagged ridge after the peak of la plata I had to get saved about 1.5 mi after the peak as I had no prior rock climbing experience. not your average tourist route.

8.24.19 Found a pair of skisun sunglasses. This hike is long and steep. I hit the trail at 6.08am made summit at 11.00am arrived back at 4.08. On the way down partner got injured so it took longer. The winds were strong at the top around 30-40 mph. They were strong enough to push me off balance at 200lbs. Top of the mountain seemed to have several paths.

This is a committing endeavor that is mentally and physically draining- for the first 6.5 miles we continually felt we were never getting closer for HOURS. I HATED talus by the end of this. By no means is this a quick lol ridge- it will require a full day of commitment But the views were amazing. Definitely required route finding experience, exposure to exposure and enduring clothing and boots. Be smart. Be prepared. Bring a helmet. And have fun!! The summit was so worth it

This was a second attempt. The first was due to getting lost under treeline and realizing too much time had been wasted. This is a LONG attempt, and requires perfect weather. Wet rocks alone pose a respectful hazard. The plan was to camp at treeline, among the tree patches and get a reasonable start start; 6 AM. At a modest pace, 7 hours for the full ridge. Water consumption was something that needed to be rationed - bring a filter for your descent. As dark clouds rolled in mid day - forecast 0%, we turned back at halfway. Views were priceless and the route has few other travelers. Absolutely loved it!!! Looked upon La Plata and easily saw a crowd of two dozen. We had the company of two other awesome hikers for the entire day...,
