Kelly Flats has long been the premier hard-core trail in northern Colorado. The trail climbs steeply out of the Cache La Poudre River Valley and winds for a considerable distance across a high ridge with beautiful views of the Mummy Range on a clear day. Noted obstacles include The Chutes and Heart Attack Hill. A wet spring often delays May 15 opening of the trail, so call ahead to verify. ATVs and UTVs may find this trail too difficult. Located in Roosevelt National Forest. For current conditions call Canyon Lakes Ranger District (970) 295-6700. First part of trail is extremely steep and rocky. Middle is easy as it passes through a residential area. Last part has some large mud holes. Body damage is a frequent occurrence on The Chutes. Not for stock SUVs.

4wd roads are great options for elevation change once they’re closed for winter! If the snow softens any more, you may need snowshoes about halfway in. Saw some fresh cat tracks about 2 miles in

FUN!!! A bit technical but definitely double in a stock Wrangler Rubicon. We have not attempted Heart Attack hill (took the bypass) but are planning to come back for that.

This trail is primarily used for off road vehicles I was the only hiker all day, not a bad thing but as the day went along more and more vehicles were on the road. Had some amazing views but there is no real TOP, I made it only 6 miles one way the road goes 10 miles one way.

Amazing trail with several nice people along the way! Heart attack hill was a blast getting up and had breathtaking views from up top. My buddy broke some things so be sure to bring some tools! A little water on the road at spots but if that’s not ur thing you could easily go around the mud holes without a problem. A razor made it up the chutes but we were not so successful!

Made it about halfway in on our Can Am Maverick 1000. Snapped a rear axle. Some helpful people helped us walk it out. Took 7 hours to get it out. Fun trail but be ready for anything. FYI-we did not take the bypass but some scouting of it for an easy way out showed it’s worse than the main trail. Washed out.

First off road trip in Colorado. Went in my 98 TJ with stock suspension and 31in mud terrains. It was very challenging but doable. Took a few scrapes to the bottom but no real damage.

Took two ATVs at the end of June. Heart Attack Hill lived up to its name. Check out our YouTube video going through the chutes. We took the trail start to finish. Amazing variety of butterflies and a good mix of terrain. Saw a lot of mountain lion scat on the trail at the top. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_hh2BR_DIZI

Loved this trail, definitely requires locking 4x4 in some spots. Made it the whole way in a stock 1991 Land Rover Defender, took the bypass and was still a challenge. If you pick your lines, it can be done. Everyone we met on the trail was awesome, as it can get quite narrow and with blind corners. Keep you eyes peeled!
