Incredibly high with lots of history and amazing views. Imogene Pass is the second highest drivable pass in Colorado. The drive is one of the most thrilling in the state. At Savage Basin, you'll pass through Tomboy Townsite, once one of most active mining towns in Colorado. A great deal of mining debris is still scattered about. Most is on private property and is dangerous to explore. The pass is blocked by snow until it is plowed, usually in early July. Unlicensed vehicles are not permitted on lower half of south side and must start trail from Camp Bird Road, where plenty of parking is available. High Point 13,114 ft., Best time to go: Mid July-Sept. Located in Uncompahgre National Forest. For current conditions call Norwood or Ouray Ranger District (970) 327-4261. Rating: Moderate. Do not take this trip lightly. The road is rocky, steep and narrow in places and passing can be dangerous. Stock SUVs should have low-range gearing, 4-wheel drive, high clearance and skid plates. Experienced drivers only.

Great trail. Awesome views. Jeep did fine no issues. Only drawback was all the side by sides. Rude, did not make sure narrow areas were clear and just go. Made them back up to passing areas a few times. People remember in Colorado up hill traveling vehicle has right-a-way.

OMG. Like Bill said, moderate is an understatement. However, I followed a couple of guys and they taught me alot. My maiden voyage for me and my jeep. The view at the summit was beyond magnificent. It was a challenge mentally somewhat, but worth gaining the experience.

Moderate is a massive understatement! This trail was a kick, but it was absolutely challenging. In some spots it was quite intense - our JK rubicon had zero challenges, was impressive. Quite a few wildflowers but they were definitely past their peak.

Ran from Ouray to Telluride, nice to end up at mining ruins. Definitely, need low range transfer case and high clearance. Huge altitude increase, rocky paths but nothing technical or challenging. Bad weather would make it much harder. Heavy traffic going down to Telluride.

Superb views, you’ll spend plenty of time stopped taking pics of the scenery. The drive is very rocky, good ground clearance is a must, as are a good set of tires. It would be very easy to slash a sidewall. 4-low is extremely useful for the steep climbs going up, and engine braking going down.

Awesome trail. Excellent views!

This was a ton of fun, not difficult in a technical sense at all. Some loose rock and narrow passing areas were the primary source of “difficulty,” but overall the off-roading was fun, exciting, and not stressful. The views sealed the deal and made this a great experience.

Definitely one of my favorite passes in Colorado. I lived there for about 7 years and have traveled over many. This one is not difficult at all with the exception of a spot or three. A must is a side trip from Camp Bird to the west up to the base of Mt Sneffels and the high alpine lakes there. IF your lucky and are there end of July early August you might catch the wildflower explosion. On a good snow pack year it might not be clear until end of July. On July 4th, they have the July 4th Ski Race at summit of the pass. Fun event.

Got to the top of Imogene and it started sleeting and 10' of visibility. A little sketchy at times, but great fun. We parked at the top and within 10 minutes it cleared up and we saw spectacular views of Telluride.

Amazing views from the highest pass in Telluride!! We departed July 5th from Telluride and went up and over Imogene Pass to Ouray. There were at least two sections of the trail we had to veer off to avoid the very slick-icy trail. The trail had not been completely cleared but with a couple slight detours we were able to navigate off and back onto the main trail.
Once we reached the peak, the trail down to Ouray was free from ice. We had two creek crossings on the way down. We removed our shoes for both icy-cold water crossings.
LOVED the view from Imogene Pass.

Love this route. Have been on this many times and it never gets old. Lots of snow still up at the top above Tomboy camp. Great drive.

Drove this just the other day and I have driven it before the opposite direction and I prefer going the Ouray to Telluride direction. This is a little bit of a technical trail but a stock 4x4 vehicle can do it is they have good ground clearance and are careful as to what line they take. I did it in my modified FJ Cruiser no problem but 4x4 is pretty much a requirement for this one, and having low gearing wouldn't hurt either.

Cool trail for the ATV. Fairly technical in some areas. I would not recommend stock 4x4vehicles despite what others may say,

Made it up this trail with a stock 2010 4x4 powerstroke crew cab easily. Nice scenery loved the Colorado beauty.
