Amazing and diverse hike!! Beautiful scenery. Saw a beautiful buck in full velvet as we reached first ridge of trail. Make sure you're prepared for drastic changes in weather. Good boots and poles. Did this hike a couple weeks ago. Storms come in and out quickly and can linger in the mountains. We encountered rain pretty steady with hail and an intense temperature drop. Not the mention lightning. None of which dampened our excitement in reaching our final destination. Saw a few through hikers but had trail mostly to ourselves. Be aware that reaching the trailhead requires or I would definitely recommend a four wheel drive vehicle. You have to cross Dexter Creek or it adds a couple extra miles. The trail itself is a steady uphill of 3000 feet so adding that two miles of I think 6-700 more feet would be gruesome. Don't miss this one!! Unforgettable scenery and experience!! A local favorite they call "Bridge of Heaven". Once you get to top you'll definitely see why!!

We went just to the green open area just about 1.8 miles up the trail. It was incredible! You got 360 degree views of Ouray all the way out to Ridgway and beyond. You can also go down into the town of Ouray from the green meadow area!

Hiked up to Bridge of Heaven (4.2 miles from trailhead above Dexter Creek); A like the moderate climb through both aspen and pine; you hike through several open meadows which are fairly warm by mid-day; still, you pop back into shaded areas frequently so you can cool off again. There are several scenic panoramas along the way, and the 360 view from the top is dramatic even for this area. over the years, they have re-cut the trail to add some switchbacks. Resist the temptation to take the old "short cuts" and you'll be rewarded with some bonus views, a more gradual ascent, and a *much* easier descent (my knees and joints thanked me). One teensy pile of snow covered a switchback on July 17 (one step on snow and I was across it). The views are most dramatic at the top, but for much of the way down you'll still be gazing and gawking. This remains one of my favorite hikes in the area.

Horsethief trail also known to us locals as "bridge of heaven." This hike is fabulous! We do it every summer and it's tough but worth it. You either park before the river crossing at dexter creek and hike the 1.5 miles to the trailhead or if you have a higher clearance 4wd you can drive the 1.5 miles to the trailhead. We didn't know what to expect the first time so we walked the 1.5 miles up- that made for a 13 mile day that was tough so get up to the trailhead if your car can make it. We do see some Subaru's as they are the official car of Colorado but mostly taller vehicles will make it no problem. This trail has insane views pretty much the whole time with Bridge of heaven being a kapow moment. Great spot for lunch. You can also through hike on this trail and just keep on going. Plenty of bears around so be very aware of your surroundings at all times when hiking in our amazing state

Very lovely trail. I haven't gone all the way over, but going up to the bridge of heaven is a gorgeous hike.
