HikingGreat!

This is now my favorite “walk in the woods” trail. So peaceful, great variety of scenery. Ironic that a trail mostly in a wilderness area is one of the best maintained trails around. Lots of welcome bridges. Very gradual uphill most of the way. No steep stretches at all till just below tree line, and the handful there are short with flats between them. Above tree line, just above Rogers Pass Lake, a steep stretch up to Heart Lake. Incredibly windy today. People were sitting down on that stretch so the wind didn’t knock them over. Some people go past Heart Lake to Rogers Pass. On a less windy day I’ll do that. Arrived at 820am and got one of the last spots in the main east portal lot — when I got down after a 3 1/2 hour round trip, cars were parked way down the road back toward Rollinsville. Re: the “difficult” rating, the only hard things really are the length and the last stretch— pretty easy to moderate overall.

Nice secluded trail. I expected more of the lake itself. So many people journeying up on my way down.

One of my favorite hikes, especially to bring out of towners on. It’s a hike, but not a HIKE if you know what I mean. It’s long enough to keep me happy, gorgeous, but not too steep or too long and the payoff up at the lakes is huge. Beautiful but a bit crowded as it was Sunday morning so to be expected. Why is it so hard to wear a mask around other people?

Beautiful trail, both walking up through the trees and then when you get up the lake. Looked fantastic with the snow still hanging around

The trail got snowy and muddy after the Crater Lakes turnoff. Microspikes could be useful if you're going up Rogers Pass and definitely a good idea up James Peak. It got a lot warmer Sunday so the snow won't last long, but the wind up high is keeping the snow cold for the moment.

The area got a few inches of snow but it's melting rapidly, no need for any special gear and you can follow clear footprints all the way up to Heart Lake so you shouldn't have a hard time finding the trail.

Great backpacking trail. Solid incline throughout and then one final push after Rogers Pass Lake up to Heart Lake. Busy trail but quiet with an early start. Great views at Heart Lake.

Trail was good. There was lots of water around, sometimes on the trail. Lots of rocks and roots but all around great hike. Steep on the last push to heart lake then really steep up to Rogers pass but really good views of winter park and back down at heart lake and the other lakes. Lots of backpackers.

BackpackingGreat!Rocky

Fantastic backpacking trail! We planned on staying for 3 nights, 4 days at each lake but didn't check the wind before hand. Needless to say, the wind was brutal and forced us to trek back after the first night. The hike to Heart lake was fairly strenuous. Tons of spots to get water and relax for a bit. The final quarter mile (maybe) to Heart lake is BRUTAL! There's a meadow you walk through as you pass the smaller lakes before and a massive switchback to get to heart lake. That switchback is no joke! Once there, its a truly spectacular view. Absolutely stunning! If you follow the trail to the lake and keep right, the trail continues (although a little overgrown) and will take you to the top of a hill on the other side of the lake. Great camping spot up there! We also saw some Mule Deer the morning we woke up at the lake. Just make sure you check the wind before hand! It was hellacious! Overall would definitely recommend this hike to anyone backpacking. Tons a beautiful views and spots to camp!

Did this last Saturday. The reward at the top is nice. The incline thru the forest is rocky and surprisingly challenging. Didn’t make it to Rogers pass bc of weather. The lakes were nice and seemed like a great place for dispersed camping. That said, passed a ton of backpackers going up on our way down. Also parking lot was full when we got back to car. So, definitely get there early!

Great spot for a short backpacking trip. Stayed overnight at the lakes and hiked up to the peak during the day. Lots of running water.

Gorgeous hike, perfect weather today. Wildflowers, water features all the way up, and the incline was chill until the very last stretch to Heart Lake past Roger’s Pass Lake. Worth it for the sweeping valley views down below.
