Gem Lake is a great little hike with some awesome views of Estes Park. The hike starts just outside of Estes up Devils Gulch Road. Turn on to Lumpy Ridge Road and park in the lot. Dogs are not allowed.

Gem Lake during the winter is not so exciting, but the views on the way there were great!

Snowed a couple inches while on the trail. Didn’t have much of a view because of the snow, but was a beautiful hike. My 11 year old did it just fine (with a few pauses).

Great hike! If timed perfectly you can make it up and then see the sunset over Estes on the way down. It’s icy in one part that needs some caution. Highly recommend if you’re looking for something quick!

Amazing trail for our first real hike! The elevation was a little tough on us Floridians, but we had a great tour guide who led the way and allowed several breaks with incredible views. Gem Lake was frozen over but we sat on the rocks and had lunch before returning down the mountain.

This was a steep (lots of steps) hike to a little lake. Only a couple icy spots. Spikes and/or poles help a lot. Quick trail that worth checking out.

Awesome trail. Didn’t use crampons. There were parts of the trail wear spikes would have been helpful. Don’t think the are required though. Hiked to overlook for sunrise.

If you want stellar views, hike this trail. Spent a week in the Rockies and this was top two of the hikes I did. Amazing views on the way up to the lake. Gem is a little gem in the mountains and frozen over but the views on the way up are totally worth it. There’s also a pit toilet on the way. It’s elevation over 8500ft so expect good cardio.

Hiked today (Monday). Parking lot was at 20% all day. Perfect conditions (sans the wind). Trail very easy to follow. I would rate this easy-moderate (considering a lot of people came up without backpacks, in sneakers) - basically many stairs. For this reason I personally continued to Balanced Rock (and saw only 2 hikers there). Adds 2 times 2 miles for the trail, worth it in my opinion. Took 6~hrs with plenty of breaks for photos.
