Francie's Cabin via Burro Trail is a 8 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Breckenridge, Colorado that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
The trail begins off the base of Peak 9, near Quicksilver chairlift. It takes you along a creek through pine forest and meadows. You will then eventually connect to Spruce Creek Trail to get to Francie's Cabin. Great scenery and a relaxing, family-friendly path.
Wonderful—and we saw a moose! Hiked/snowshoed this trail to the cabin on Valentine’s Day. Not much traffic. We were able to hike with spikes for 3/4 of the way up, as it was packed enough (but spikes were definitely prudent—would not do in only boots—and if you stepped off the trodden trail, you’d sink), then snowshoes felt more efficient. Nordic tracks much of the way, but would be tricky in spots. Clear, well maintained trail, though make sure to hang to the right at a fork with about a mile to go, as it’s easy to head off onto another trail. Love the cathedral of trees prior to the top; and that view is breathtaking. Saw the one moose on the way back around 2:30, about a half-mile before the lift; he was about 50 yards off the trail and just hanging out in one spot—pretty neat (while not too suspenseful).
Well packed snow on a clearly defined trail. Only saw 3-4 other groups. Beautiful weather. The last mile was a lot steeper! Nice views from the top.
Beautiful & very isolated trail through a winter wonderland. Made it all the way up but boy oh boy the last 2 miles were quite vertical. Fortunate the snow was packed and wind was at bay. I don't suggest doing this without proper hiking boots & crampons. No moose sightings sadly & only thing I wish was more of a view from the summit - felt like I deserved it for that last climb!
Hard pack so could use hiking boots rather than snowshoes. A few down trees to get over. We’re two flatlanders on Day 1 in Breck so only made it the first mile, yet that part was a gorgeous tree path with rumbling stream next to you under the snow.
Trail was packed snow all the way. Used yaktrax and didn’t need the snowshoes I carried
This is a gorgeous trail, once you find it! I parked at Beaver Run, base of Peak 9 and had no idea where the trailhead was! You need to walk under the chairlift through a clearing and then you see the sign. The recent snow really made for a winter wonderland, in fall! I was hoping to see moose since others had recently been lucky enough! I only made it 4 miles today but look forward to doing this again soon. Really a nice hike!
Saw 3 moose at the beginning of the trail. We couldn’t get the entire way with a 3 yr old but great scenery!
This was a great trail! didnt go the whole way but saw a Moose family cross the trail and the creek side part was especially nice.
Well maintained and enjoyable hike for the family. Carried our 13 month old and it was no problem. Great morning hike!
We did a minimal amount of the actual trail. Lots of bushwhacking and real adventure.
Beautiful day!! Weather was perfect. Not too crowded. Got out about 10:30 & had a great day
What a gorgeous, forested, refreshing hike that can be reached by foot from downtown Breckenridge! Not hard at all — very slow incline. There’s definitely a lot of rocks and fallen trees so we recommend hiking boots and to watch your footing. We went mid October around 11am and saw a few groups of people but not many! We took our dog who loved the fallen trees to jump on and the lovely creek to run through. Very refreshing 6 miles, and we can’t wait to try it with snowshoes!
