Getting There

NOTE: As of August 2020, this trail is closed Monday - Thursday, 8 AM - 4:30 PM every week. Please check here for updates: https://bouldercolorado.gov/osmp The flatirons are striking, tilted, sandstone rock slabs that form Boulder's beautiful backdrop. There are five distinct flatirons on the western side of Boulder. The route on this page takes you to two of the most popular. This seamless transition from urban to wilderness is why people love Colorado. The mountains of the Boulder Open Space loom over Boulder inviting people to come explore. There are two trailheads for this route. The route shown on this page has the hiker starting at the Chautauqua Trailhead. A little to the east is the Enchanted Mesa Trailhead. This trail can be quite rocky, and there is some scrambling involved. In the winter, this route is much more difficult requiring spikes and route-finding experience.

There are restrooms and a tourist information center at the trailhead.

Boulder Open Space phone number: (303) 441-3440

This trail gets incredibly crowded, so get there early!

Directions from Highway 36: Take the Baseline Road exit and travel west toward the mountains. Follow Baseline Road 1.5 miles passed the entrance for Chautaugua Park to the Gregory Canyon Trailhead. Turn left into the parking lot on a dirt road. A parking fee is charged at this trailhead for vehicles not registered in Boulder County or not displaying a Boulder Resident Permit. Permits can be obtained at the trailhead or at the Chautaugua Park Rangers Cottage.

HikingGreat!

Just a heads up, Mon-Thurs from like 8-4:30 pm part of flatirons 1&2 are closed for maintenance so be aware of that and plan accordingly. It was a really fun trail with some light scrambling over rocks here and there. First time hiking in the area and it was great. The trail head was really well maintained. For me, the trail was a little unclear at times and just kinda ends?? There wasn’t a sign that said we reached the top/end like I’ve been used to, so it was a little confusing. But all in all it was really fun and presented some really amazing views. We went around 4pm and got back before dark which was really nice. I think the hardest part of it was the very beginning because the first part of the trail is so steep and flat.

HikingGreat!

We did this hike on our first day in Boulder. It was a good way to get used to the elevation. We started around noon so it was moderately trafficked. It was somewhat difficult because of the fast elevation gain. Beautiful views at the top!

This is one of the nicest, manicured trails I’ve ever hiked. The view on the way up was really spectacular but the view at the very top is nothing to speak about since the trail peaks on the other side of of the flatiron. A lot of people had masks ready to put on as you pass each other.

Great hike- gave me a great mental work out on one small area that felt like scrambling but my fears took a back seat. The reward was watching some climbers free solo up the second flat iron.

Super fun hike. This was our first hike of the trip. If this is an indication of what's to come, we will have a good hiking trip. Parking does get pretty packed early, but we got lucky, someone was leaving as we were pulling into the main parking lot. SCORE!!

Rocky and steep toward the end. Beautiful trail that's challenging, and so convenient to get to. Regrettably, lots of college age people not wearing masks on narrow trails during COVID pandemic.

It was a nice hike, moderate difficulty, super heavily trafficked, understandable for a Saturday AM the week that students arrived at the university

To the post below, I would certainly call this hard and not moderate. But it was really fun! there were so many boulders and at one point we free ranged climbed up a rock and the view is stunning. But quite difficult. Happy hiking!
