Getting There

The flatirons are striking, tilted, sandstone rock slabs that form Boulder's beautiful backdrop. There are five distinct flatirons on the western side of Boulder. The route on this page takes you to two of the most popular. This seamless transition from urban to wilderness is why people love Colorado. The mountains of the Boulder Open Space loom over Boulder inviting people to come explore. There are two trailheads for this route. The route shown on this page has the hiker starting at the Chautauqua Trailhead. A little to the east is the Enchanted Mesa Trailhead. This trail can be quite rocky, and there is some scrambling involved. In the winter, this route is much more difficult requiring spikes and route-finding experience.

There are restrooms and a tourist information center at the trailhead.

Boulder Open Space phone number: (303) 441-3440

This trail gets incredibly crowded, so get there early!

Directions from Highway 36: Take the Baseline Road exit and travel west toward the mountains. Follow Baseline Road 1.5 miles passed the entrance for Chautaugua Park to the Gregory Canyon Trailhead. Turn left into the parking lot on a dirt road. A parking fee is charged at this trailhead for vehicles not registered in Boulder County or not displaying a Boulder Resident Permit. Permits can be obtained at the trailhead or at the Chautaugua Park Rangers Cottage.

This was a nice moderate hike. We ended up parking on the street nearby, and using the app. The walk from the side streets wasn’t far. We got there around 9 AM. There’s a little scramble to summit the mountain and our dog had some trouble, but we hear the views are amazing. If your dog can’t be carried and isn’t great with scrambles, this can be a bit of a challenge. Otherwise it was gorgeous, and busy!

Great hike but definitely hard especially with how rocky it is! Im sure a bit easier in the Fall when it’s not as hot. Water a MUST! Great views at the top. Also, very heavy traffic on the trail. Most wearing mask but definitely some not at all. If you bring your pet, bring water!

Was a lovely trail. Easy to navigate and nice and steep 3/4 the way up.

I started about 5:00am and got back down around 8:00am. It’s a gorgeous hike but keep in mind it is straight uphill to the top (over 1000 feet of elevation gain). The switchbacks however make the ascent fairly easy and you get great views of Chautauqua Park and CU Boulder. At the top You get great views out west of Longs Peak. About halfway up the trail (near the first flatiron?) the trail briefly gets hard to see and you have to scramble over some rocks but the trail reappears quickly after that.

Straight up trail. It is a scramble at the top. It’s a very rocky trail. I went on a Tuesday and got parking in the lot at 9am. There are a lot of people at the beginning of the trail, but it tapers off and you can get some solo time. Beautiful views and the Flatirons are magnificent. Bring water and enjoy!

Great trail! Mix of sun and shade, very crowded and not many folks wearing masks. Very steep with a few sections of scrambling, would recommend a hiking shoe with good traction, not a running shoe.

This hike is amazing! Incredible views, switchbacks toward the top, and plenty of opportunities to do a little climbing. The view from the top is wonderful, and getting an up close look at the flatirons themselves is very cool. I went on a Monday morning and there were only a handful of people on the trail. I parked along the street and had no issues finding a spot.

I came on this trail after work on a weekday around 5:45PM, and there were surprisingly quite a few people on the trail as well. The hike up wasn't too bad until the end which was quite steep, and the trail doesn't really have a definitive end nor viewpoint. It was a pleasant hike, some parts shaded and some not. It took me about 45 minutes to get to the top and another 40 or so minutes to get back down. Not a bad hike!

It's a good workout trail. Up top it's really hard to tell where you're done, since there's no real summit. There are places to catch a good view, and the Flatirons are really magnificent up close. 3 hours from start to finish. Great way to start a week!

Hiked to the base of first and climbed it! As a first trad climb that was incredibly tough but what a pay off at the peak! Get the right gear and climb with a buddy unless you’re like the 10 beasts I saw soloing it. Be safe, have fun and Journey well. Memento Mori.

I did this the day after I got to Boulder and it was tough for me since I was not fully acclimated to the elevation. I pushed through and the views from the top were worth it. The little scramble was also fun.
