10/14/19. Foot traffic and cold nights have turned last weeks snow into hard, slippery ice. Any shady spot above 8300 is a really slick surface. .Basically- any place past the fork at The Pool - in either direction. Boots need super grippy lugs or better yet get out the micro spikes. Poles help too. It’s a beautiful trail. Just prepare yourself a bit for the conditions.

Amazing views. Especially once you return on Cub Lake. Park at Cub Lake trailhead, hike up road to The Pool, then come back down Cub Lake.

A relatively easy hike that took us right on 3 hours going clockwise. The lake is nice spot to dip your feet in and cool off. Fairly busy but still plenty of space to roam and not get caught up on the trail.

A really nice hike! Took others advice and went counter clockwise starting at cub trailhead. Saw lots of wild life including elk herd and large male moose right on trail. Fern lake still had lots of snow at the top. A bit crowed but was expected. Started around 9:30 and finished around 3.

Hiked on 06/10. Great hike with great views. Did the trail clockwise so had the road walk last. Trail is easy to follow. No need for micro spikes or snowshoes. There was snow only for literally the last hundred feet to Fern Lake

This was a great loop that took us through some very distinct alpine settings, starting with the meadows at the bottom and ending with beautiful Fern Lake. The walk along the stream from the Fern Lake trailhead was very pretty as well. There’s packed snow covering the trail for the last 1/4 mile to Fern Lake. We used traction going down, but you don’t truly need it.

This is a pretty gentle loop compared to several other hikes we did during our 4 days in RMNP. We arrived late (9 am) to the trail head and squeezed a legal parking spot. We decided to hike ccw, heading to Fern Lake first and then circling around to Cub lake on the return. This gave a great contrast between the two lakes; Ferm lake surrounded by green pines and Cub lake with the circle of lily pads surrounded by dead pine on the all side. Both beautiful in their own way. As expected, we were not the only people on the trail, but still had plenty of quiet time in the woods.

Lots of wildlife. We saw 2 bears, 3 moose, and 2 deer. The Fern Lake trailhead portion up to the Pool was the best part - the river was beautiful scenery. The middle section up and over to Cub lake wasn’t my favorite. Not a bad starter home to get used to distance and elevation

It could be worth to walk all the way to bear lake instead, and take the bus back to your car
