HikingOver grown

The trail itself is really short and the start is not really defined so we just started walking until we found a path. But the woods are gorgeous with moss and red bark! There is a little frozen waterfall about half way up where there’s a good view as well! Make sure your car has AWD or 4wd as the road up isn’t paved and pretty bumpy. The hike to view ratio is great!

Off Road DrivingGreat!

this is a great little hike. be careful to stay on Rainbow road to the top. GPS guided us to Mc... road. it was very narrow with some very challenging rocks in the road and on the sides. Can do it with a high clearance 4wdrive, but it's not easy.

Still plenty of snow in spots at least on the east side. Did not do the full loop, only reached reservoir and fished for a bit before a storm ended that.

Very rocky but do able. VERY crowded! There were tents all over, and trash. There were multiple piles of human waste by the forest within 10ft of the lake. Not my cup of tea, way too crowded with trash car campers.

CampingRocky

The drive in was definitely rocky, need some high clearance to make it to the reservoir. Was car camping and woke up at about 1am to some dude looking into the back of my truck. Just a warning to anyone who was thinking of doing the same.

6/20 Drove up the trail, very rocky but doable in my F150 until we got high centered in a snow drift across the trail about 200 yards south of the lake. Friendly couple more prepared than us pulled us out. Walked the rest of the way up to the lake. Lake was full, heavy run off. Worth the effort to make the trip. Gorgeous! Lake still had some ice on it.

HikingRockySnow

Did this hike 05/16. The road leading to the trail head is very Rocky and snow packed in places. I parked a mile from the trail head. The trail head itself is still covered in a lot of snow. I didn't bring snowshoes (bad idea) I was postholing about half the time up to my waist at points. I made it to the top exhausted but the views are stunning. Definitely recommend later season when the snow is gone

Conditions were 10 degrees. clear and windy snow covered. Tried driving with a Subaru outback and a jeep. Outback didn't make it too far, winched it out of a ditch with the jeep, it couldn't make it through the drifts so we hiked 2 miles to the reservoir. Some hiked without snow shoes fine as long as you stayed on the snowmobile packed snow, otherwise drifts were 2' deep. Lake was frozen over. Gradual incline to the lake until the last 1/4 mile gets a little steeper.

Stunning views!!! Made it all the way in a Subaru Crosstrek but next time will bring a truck. The last 0.3 was especially rough. Tried our hand at fishing but had no luck...one bite all day. We saw a lot of small trout however nothing big enough you’d want to keep. Lots of rocks make it easy to snag your line. Wonderful scenery, mountain sounds and a nice walk around the lake. The wild flowers were poppin.

Beautiful trail! Camped out about a quarter mile south of the reservoir. Absolutely stunning. Definitely take the advice of previous reviews regarding the conditions of the road up. My Honda CRV did just fine but some of the others in our group parked below and were shuttled up because their cars could not make it.

Went Monday and made it almost all the way in my RDX but couldn’t get clearance to go all the way so we hiked. The weather was perfect and the hike was amazing. There were quite a few mosquitoes by the falls due the the rain the day prior but overall best hikes in a while.

Don't give this trail a bad review because your car couldn't handle the road.... 4WD isn't required but I wouldn't go unless I had it. The road gets rough and high clearance is required. We drove up there and made it about half way up the road before we had to stop and hike because of the deep snow and slush. Totally worth it though!

Fishing

Road definitely requires four wheel drive type of clearance...this isn't something I'd take a car on. Even in our Chevy Silverado I was still tossed around. The road is just very very rocky. The lake? Very pretty! Fast moving clouds on the day. Saw fish rise but no luck (might be due to keeping an eye on our 1yo & 2.5yo kiddos). Didn't experience the full trail around the lake, but saw others doing it. Gorgeous waterfall at the inlet, and streams flowing into the reservoir too. Pretty wildflowers to keep my daughter entertained as well. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT: the amount of trash. There were shards of glass around most obvious campsites, cans, what appeared to be a rolled up tent & stakes, fishing line. I picked up a bunch & took it out. If you visit anywhere, please practice leave no trace so all can enjoy the beauty we are blessed with!!

Love this place!! We meant to go to Chins lake but ended up taking the road straight instead and found ourselves at Fall River reservoir. The road leading up to the reservoir is definitely a bumpy one and 4 wheel drive is definitely suggested. You can make it to the reservoir in a stock SUV (our friends make it in a 2013 Outback) but you will have to go very slow and watch your tire placement. We made it up with ease in a '98 4Runner. The fishing up here was awesome! Lots of decent sized cutthroat trout that were taking flies like candy! According to the nice ranger, Cass, I spoke with on the phone, you can take non motorized watercraft on this reservoir as well which may help get you a bigger fish. We plan on bringing our kayaks next time for sure! You can camp up here as well but it definitely gets busy on the weekends. We went up on a Sunday around 11am and all the weekend campers were packing up and getting ready to leave and there were lots of them! Definitely a spot worth checking out if you enjoy a good rocky road and great fishing!!
