This trail is more of a dirt road that you can access other trails off of. The mountain is geared to mountain bikers instead of hikers. This trail is straight up with no break in incline the entire way. If you are a seasoned hiker at altitude, this is a moderate hike. If you are from the Midwest or sea level, this would be considered a difficult/strenuous hike. There is no shade the entire trail. The view of Mt. Werner ski mountain at the quarry is gorgeous.

This is a multitrail system. My favourites were wild rose where you’ll drown in aspens and Larry where I saw a lot of wild life at dawn. But yes there are many bikers here. Keep ears peeled.

Full sun exposure on the hiking trail makes it a hot one. But beautiful views of the ski resort and town. I’d recommend early or late in the day when it’s cooler. Bikes and maintenance equipment kick up quite a bit of dust onto us hikers as they pass. I think it’s much better as a mountain bike area.

Many trails in this area ... but we stuck to the main hiking trail to the quarry and views of Steamboat and airport in the distance. Plenty of bike options, if you've got that equipment.

So many trails up in here. Lots of mountain bikers. I'd like to come back and bike it. But it was a nice hike with the kids. Lots of sun exposure.

Great cardio if you take lane of pain to the top!

Open, wide trail for the climb up to the Quarry. Be sure to see the Quarry's 270-degree view over Steamboat .... breathtaking! For the more adventuresome, hike up the "Lane of Pain" to the top of Emerald Mountain.
