Moderate hike to the base of Elk Falls and then continuing to Elk Falls Overlook. Incredible sweeping views of Lion's Head along trail. Pass through meadows, aspen groves, and around Elk Falls Pond. Opportunity to see lots of wildlife. Be aware of bears, mountain lions, and coyotes. Do not feed the wildlife.

Nice long hike. I’d recommend going up to the top of the lions head if it’s open. There is a lions head loop.

We did not go to the overlook because going to the falls alone is almost 10 miles (roubdtrip), and our dog got to the falls and decided that was all the hiking he wanted to do for the day...

What an incredible park!! Elk Falls and its Overlook are quite the sights while Marmot Passage and Scout Line trails kept this Flatlander's pulse at Orange and camera clicking outstanding views with the last vestiges of Autumn yellows. The trail map tells me that there's a bunch more to tread. Hurray

We did a version of this that came out to 11.7 miles. Lots of snow on the ground but not ice yet. No need for extra traction but waterproof boots would be helpful. Had trouble finding the falls from the lookout. It was frozen over and snow covered so the views of the falls were not much. This hike gets you through some meadows, forest, a small lake and eventually to the lookout. At this time of year I would recommend skipping the lookout and taking the trail below the falls instead. Not many people once we got past the lake. Staunton Ranch trail can get crowded with people and bikes. Not too strenuous except for the last push to the lookout.

Very runnable--enough elevation gain to be challenging but fairly mellow and excellent trail conditions. The route is longer than the 12.8 miles noted in the description if you do the overlook and falls spurs, not just the loop to/from the pond; by my calculations closer to 16 miles (leaving from Mason Creek parking lot, adds a mile or so).
