Deer Mountain Trail is a great hike to Deer Mountain Peak that offers panoramic views from the top. The trail can be accessed at the Deer Mountain Trailhead off of Trail Ridge Road. The trail starts off in a valley and soon enters a steep forested area, dominated by species such as ponderosa pine. Once you enter the forested area, the trail has many switchbacks that ease into the elevation change. The trail is easy to follow until the last half mile or so. Finding the summit requires a steep little jaunt up to the top. Once at the Deer Mountain summit, you are rewarded with gorgeous views of Longs Peak, Moraine Park, Upper Beaver Meadows, and Estes Park. This is one of the many popular hiking trails in Rocky Mountain National park and there is limited parking in the parking area. It is advised to get there early to secure a parking spot. Many people on this trail underestimate it - make sure to bring plenty of water and hiking boots!

Trail was amazing, views from the summit were absolutely worth it. Im fairly fit and completed it in about 1.5 hours to the summit with just snow boots now spikes or snow shoes. I would say watch your stepmom some areas as it was a little slippery due to some frozen snow

Was a really nice hike before the upcoming snowstorm. Was a little icy and snowy towards the top, but it was fine with spikes. We didn't see any other people on the trail (but plenty of deer), and the view at the top was obscured by clouds, but the hike was still overall good.

Admittedly, you can see all the best views of RMNP by car but there’s a certain satisfaction seeing incredible views hiking. This hike delivers on that. Great 6 mile hike that offers splendid views of RMNP. My son and I hiked it mid November and wished we had hiking crampons. Part of the trail was clear but more than half had packed snow/ice which made it a hit more treacherous. But we, like many others, made it safely up & down without.

Great hike with amazing views throughout. We rented med micro-spikes and they were very helpful while going through the snow. I Would love to do this hike again in the summer.

Excellent moderate-rated hike. It got very slippery above snow line (about halfway up), where other hikers had packed down the snow, then the sun melted it enough for it to turn to ice. Micro spikes are not necessary but would be incredibly helpful. Lots of breathtaking views along the switchbacks, with a 360° view from the top. If you’re not from this elevation, the decreased oxygen will create an additional challenge. Bring at least 1 liter of water, as there are no water sources along the way, with the exception of snow.

Hiked this on Friday 10/25. Slushy basically the entire way. Trail was easy to follow. Great views whole way up. Ended up being about 6 miles and took 4 hours including a long lunch break. A must-hike trail if visiting Estes for the first time

Hiked this trail on 10/25/19. There’s was snow on most of the trail going up but the temps in the 40’s melted most of the snow on the bottom half of the trail. Overall was a good hike, not very difficult. We used crampons, there were people using them also but other using tennis shoes. The extra traction definitely made it easier and more enjoyable I think.

scenery was beautiful but the altitude killed me haha

I absolutely loved this hike. It wasn't extremely difficult because it is a gradual climb with breaks. it is scenic almost the entire distance. Today there was almost no ice but that changes quickly. No use for the crampons I took. Windy but gorgeous at the top.

Did this hike on 10/14 and it was beautiful, but I wish I’d had spikes. Many areas are very iced over. I started hiking at about 9:15 am and had very little company until I was most of the way back down.

Amazing hike with incredible views the entire way. We hiked it this afternoon (10/13/19) & the last portion of the trail was still a bit snowy & a little icy (to be expected in mid October) which made it a little tricky on the way down. I had hiking shoes on but still slid so while spikes, yak tracks or anything similar aren’t necessary to make it to the top & back, it certainly helps, especially on your decent. We got to the trail head around 11 & finished around 3 but we stopped for pics & hung out at the top for a bit. The view at the summit is amazing & not one to be missed!

Great chances to see wildlife on Deer mtn. Moderate difficulty is accurate, steady incline but not difficult. Had to turn around today 10/13/19 as there was too many Bulls in the area, rut szn baby.

Overall a great trail. Steady incline on the way up with some beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. There’s a bit of the mountain that gets flat - to hit the summit, stay right. Biggest incline is up to the summit. A bit of wind on the top, nothing unbearable. Definitely one to visit while in RMNP!

spectacular views the entire hike. No scrambling, just gradual ascent and elevation gain. Only rated a 4 out of 5 because the trail is not marked except at the forks and I lost it once and wasted about 15 minutes. To avoid doing what I did- at the aspen grove the trial makes a V to start the switchbacks up the mountain. Even though the trial is worn straight ahead, don’t follow it, it will dead end pretty quickly. The elevation gain is noticeable but moderate until the final stretch. The last bit to summit will make you work for it but completely worth it! Started out at 2pm and took me just at 2 hours to summit and another hour to get back down. It was very windy the whole way and windy at the summit, but still enjoyable. Do this hike! You’ll be glad you did!

This is definitely a moderate hike. Not a lot climbing, but it has good elevation gain. The summit is worth the hike. The view is awesome. We went in the late morning. Not too many people, but some for sure. There are a lot of flat, open areas to pass, change pace, or rest out of the way. Parking was fine.

Nice trail. Just really one aspen grove, but had great views of the surrounding valley. Pretty windy on the west side of the summit, but found a good spot on the east.

This is not an easy hike - it is labeled moderate for a reason. But the views are worth the climb! You can also see lots of great views without going all the way to the summit. So if you are looking for something more easy you can do part of the trail. It’s a great way to get to a summit without taking on a difficult hike. I arrived right around 9am (middle of the week) and there was plenty of parking at the trailhead.

Fairly easy hike...took my two kids who are not in to long hikes, and it was the perfect length and difficulty for them. Beautiful views and wildlife.

Amazing hike! I headed to RMNP to see the leaves at Bear Lake but the parking was beyond full at 10am. The ranger I spoke with suggested that I hike nearby instead of shuttling in and out, and come back in 3 hours when there was less traffic. He recommended Deer Mountain summit and I’m so glad he did! Amazing views all the way up and down, gorgeous aspens and fall leaves, and a great workout without being too too hard. Highly recommend
