I really enjoyed this hike! I was planning to reach Tanner peak from Tanner trail, but discovered my 2wd could make it to this trailhead. The road was nerve wrecking however due to drop offs with no guard rails. This trail allowed me to reach the summits of Curley and Tanner with one hike. There are fantastic views from both peaks and the trail follows changing environments which keeps it interesting. Fairly quiet trail on a Sunday surprisingly since dirt bikes are allowed up from east bear TH, and also ATVs on the portions of the tanner/stultz trails. Due to only allowing dirt bikes, the east bear trail has a better surface than the other two approaches. Approaching Tanner Peak was very hot with little shade, and there was no accessible water except near the trailhead. Would not recommend during potentially stormy days due to lightning danger. Just hiking to my favorite of the two, Curley Peak, would be an easier, yet still great, option. If you find the right route (North slope), you can basically walk up Curley on a social trail, or there are fun options to scramble as well.
