This made an interesting loop of both Crystal and Catamount Reservoirs rather than the traditional out and back Catamount trail. The out from GMF followed the light blue dot trail. It was pretty steep straight up from town but the trail was more walkable than the rocky Catamount trail. Biggest draw back was the half mile on Pikes Peak highway then about a mile on the road along beautiful Catamount reservoir to connect to Catamount trail for the return.

Trail is steep and very tough goin up. The reservoir was really low at the top, and it started raining so we didn’t get to enjoy much. Views are nice going up, not a ton of stopping points tho.

Signage wasn’t great, trail leads up to Pikes Pike Toll road which you can just drive there & becomes a tourist “stop”.

I loved the hike, despite the switch backs, I thought it was challenging but not impossible. Had a great time, beautiful views! Saw deer, chipmunks, and a few hawks.

Narrow trail through the trees with lots of switchbacks. It’s pretty narrow and steep at points but has some great views. It’s a little confusing following the trail as a few cross over each other.

Overall I really liked this hike! It was challenging, but not so hard that it felt impossible. The trail is steep in parts & pretty narrow. We had a dog with us, but if your dog pulls a lot I wouldn’t recommend bringing them because when you go down it could get dangerous. It was mostly shaded & had some pretty waterfalls on the way. It’s not marked super well after about halfway up, but we didn’t really have issues finding our way. It had a few other hikers on it, but overall wasn’t crowded & we really appreciated that given how narrow it is. *Finding the trailhead can be a little tough because it’s imbedded in a neighborhood. You’ll have to park down by the little pond in the town (where it shows you the trailhead starts on here) then use goggle maps to map & walk to the trailhead itself.

An ok trail. Narrow with a lot of switchbacks. The trail is a little confusing because you cross over two other trails and there are no markings for the Crystal trail until about 1/4 of the way up. Some small snow patches on the trail, but nothing impassable.

Hiked on 2/26/20. The entire trail was covered in snow. Due to traffic, the snow was packed down. Also a couple areas of really bad ice. I do not suggest doing this without micro spikes. Most of the climb consists of switchbacks through the woods but the top 1/6 or so is exposed with incredible views. Overall, I really enjoyed it. Great workout with varied terrain and sweet views. Beware - the way down consists partly of a controlled slide situation, even with spikes.

Jan 25, 2020. This is a really great trail with lots of amazing views of Green Mountain Falls, and Cascade. This trail was VERY icy today. We live in the area, and felt challenged in several areas due to ice. We did not have microspikes, but I would not recommend without them due to safety. There were a few areas that we had to go off trail because there was so much ice on the trail. We actually didn't descent on this trail because we felt it was too dangerous this time of year without spikes. With all this said, the views make it well worth any challenges. It is really spectacular and we will definitely do again. I wouldn't recommend it with young kids. It is rated appropriately. There were areas that we (due to ice) were scrambling on all 4s. The trail is not marked well as you go higher. you follow the yellow markers, then the green (Kirkpatrick) then the blue (Crystal) markers. The markers stop at some point, but the switch backs are fairly obvious. We are looking forward to doing this trail again this summer. You can fish once you get up to the reservoir, if you choose (with a permit), so if you want to trek with your pole, you can. Also, Crystal Reservoir is drained at the moment, but Pikes Peak is awe inspiring still. The mileage isn't accurate. The map doesn't follow all the switchbacks. It's about 3 miles up.

Had a great time - only wish you didn’t have to come back down the rocky trail that you go up. Hard on the knees.

Good hike. I would say the ratings and the descriptions are honest. The condition of the trail is in good shape but the reservoir is being drained, so it might be a better hike early in the summer than mid to late summer.

Great trail! Challenging steep climbs, but has some nice views and flat parts. You’ll get to the rocks on top and then go over them and you’ll walk a flat road to the reservoir across the street. They’re currently draining the reservoir so it’s not a super impressive view of the lake, but the view of Pikes Peak will blow your mind!

Really nice trail, great conditions. Definitely on the challenging side but nothing crazy. Fairly lightly traffic
