Only walked in 3.6 mi and back with a little off the trail here and there (made it 7.9 mi all together. took me around 3 hr and 15 min) If you only want to get to the ridge, it’s a little less than 3 mi. Easy, nice work out. It was super windy when I was there though. I was literally blown away!

If you are up on the Mesa, this is a can’t-miss hike. The ridge of Crag Crest has amazing views in any direction!!

This trail makes an excellent loop. In total the loop is about 11.5 miles. There is a lot of timber work being done on the lower portion of the route, which leaves the trail exposed to lots of bright sunshine.

A beautiful hike through the forest and above tree line. Minor exposure in some areas. I hiked 5.2 miles in and back out. Not too strenuous, but hiking at elevation will get your heart rate going.

9/1/19: Arguably my favorite hike in Colorado because of all the different terrain. The trail goes thru forest, over rocks, on top of ridge lines, around lakes, and thru meadows (all with amazing views, flowers, and wildlife). Conditions were pretty perfect. Temps were in the 70’s and the trail in good shape. Was worried about the mosquitoes after reading posts from last month, but we didn’t encounter any or use any bug spray. Had to scramble over a few downed trees across the trail on the lower loop (thanks to loggers), but it was still beautiful. Was expecting to be more exposed to the sun on the lower loop too, but it wasn’t bad. Great Hike!

One of my favorite treks! Gorgeous views and soooo many wildflowers.

Parked at the west lot and hiked 4.35 miles just past the crest and went back. Didn’t want to do the lower loop with the trees being worked on down below. Trail is in great shape and no bugs at all!! Saw 3 other groups of hikers the whole time. the wildflowers were beautiful!! Beautiful views and great hike. The views never get old!!

Did the loop instead of the out and back. The hike on the crest is awesome. The lower loop was not as interesting and mostly in the sun. The logging made some parts a little underwhelming. Make sure to be looking for trail signs when the trail crosses onto the logging road. Overall beautiful hike with tons of lake views and wildflowers.

Spectacular scenery and wildflowers! We saw previous reviews about bugs and doused ourselves with bug spray and did not get any bites.

First time hiking this trail this year, hiked the west half numerous times last year. I went from the west trailhead and got the toughest part of the climb over with first. Bugs were plentiful, but manageable, just a few lightly muddy patches. I did the whole loop, the lower/east end is completely open now. The full loop is about 10.2 miles, but the lower 4 miles or so weave in and out of the logging roads. Keep your eyes open for trail markers during the east end of the loop. AllTrails shows just the 6 mile out and 6 mile back route, but the whole loop is more enjoyable and less strenuous IMO. Any portion of this trail is going to be enjoyable, just pick your piece.

Went only 3 miles in with a turnaround at what I assume was the beginning of the “crest.” 360 degrees views. Mosquitos were heavy throughout. First mile or so with lots of rocks and some portions were not runnable.

the logging roads make the lower section a lot more difficult. stay on the logging roads till you see flagging tape for trail .

It was underwhelming. I've heard such great things about this trail. Pretty easy climb from the west parking lot. Some muddy sections. Some snow patches. The exposure at the top was minimal. The mosquitoes were the only thing that lived up to the hype. Bug spray seemed worthless. Glad I wore long sleeves, pants, and that I had my face wrap.

Trail is in great condition. Bugs were very bad. My wife and I used almost an entire 11oz can of off! deep woods.

Lovely today. Wear heavy duty bug spray and you will be fine. The closed signs are still out on the east trail but it is open. Did in and out from east trailhead, about 7 1/2 miles.

I was really excited about this trail because it looked like I would be getting some lovely views; however I failed to take seriously the warnings against mosquitoes. I turned around about 3/4 of a mile in because the mosquitoes were SO BAD. Prep for them if you want to enjoy this trail. Otherwise I’m sure it’s gorgeous.

Love this trail, the views are amazing. Though currently there is trail closure some you can not complete the whole loop (as of 7/19/2019).

very nice four plus mile low grade hike to the end of the crest where it continues to be closed. I wish they would open the whole loop again. mosquitoes are not a bother if you wear insect repellent clothing and you keep moving. It's when you stop that they get you. still some small fields of snow drifts which is nice for the dogs! gets to about mid-to-upper 60s which is awesome compared to the Grand Valley.
