Did this one on 9/15, it’s a pretty easy hike. Absolutely stunning. Amazing aspen groves and a beautiful creek runs by the trail most of the time. You can go as long as you’d like. A few avalanche damaged areas but nothing my dog, wife and I couldn’t traverse. We will be back to backpack here next year.

Beautiful wildflowers and vistas. Not much shade for the first section of the trail.

What a beautiful hike! We went up about 4 miles and turned around. An avalanche tore through the area this winter and the trees were all laying down. You could imagine the snow just flowing through the valley. Pretty amazing. This made the trail hard to follow at times and it got pretty scramble-y around mile 3 but the views were spectacular. I can’t wait to go back when I have the time to get all the way up to the springs. Oh! And the trailhead was a bit hard to find. Take castle creek road to conundrum creek road then follow the signs. You’ll drive past many homes then the road dead ends at the parking lot.

I love this trail!!!! Breathtaking, we saw a bull moose 30 feet off trail. Lots of avalanche debris.

Wife and I used this hike to acclimate to the altitude after traveling in from Missouri (990 ft) elevation. We were surprised by the amount of new vegatation along the trail (not obscuring), and the availability of shade after the first .5 mile from the TH. The first quarter mile from the TH you will find 2 large avalanche debris fields, but the trail has been mostly cleared and easily identified. Just don’t expect to move along the trail at a normal clip in these areas as there is some stepping over logs, etc. Surprisingly, the debris is covering frozen snow/ice still. Another avalanche field is crossed at about 1.5 mile from the TH. At about 1.7 mile a moose was observed in the wet lowland area. We wanted to not disturb, so we turned around at that point. It is spring up here, lots of new flowers, and snow runoff. One day we’ll make it back to the hot springs, but not this trip. Good day trip.

Small day hike only a few miles in. Forest service workers clearing trees in Avalanche areas. Planning on heading up and back tomorrow.
