Great hike. Beautiful stream filled with trout. Went on a Sunday, so saw lots of hikers and bikers. Bikers were incredibly polite and friendly. Many dogs, none of them leashed. A considerable amount of dog crap on the trail and many bags of crap left along the trail....which were there when we hiked up, and still there four hours later when we got down.

Trail from upper trailhead to Gudy’s rest, 6 miles RT. Generally easy. Good trail. Encountered deer & a few hikers, dogs & mountain bikers along the way. Shaded. Great views @ top.

8 miles of shaded trail. Lots of hikers, dogs, and bikers were on the trail. Gudy’s Rest was easy to find and the view was pretty.

This is a great hike along the creek with a minimal elevation increase over the first 2.5 miles up to the point where the switchbacks start. A majority of the trail has shade on it so even in the heat of the day, it is a comfortable hike. Also, this hike is great for someone acclimating to the elevation gain.

This is a popular hike due to its proximity to Durango and we saw quite a few people and dogs and bikes on the trail although it was not overly crowded on a Tuesday late morning.

3.5 stars.

The Good: the quick rise from the stream bed to overlooking it at 40, 80, and 100 feet up; the conifer forest and wind whooshing through it; for me, the timing worked that I had the bench at Gudy’s Rest for 30 minutes to myself.; a Chimpumk; butterflies and the sound from the creek for most of the journey; 80% shaded; mountain bikers that were courteous; creek water to cool my head in before hearing back; amiable hikers, nude tots gleefully dipping in swimming holes; how easy it is to get to; “pay off” views at very top

The Meh: the creek bottom is perfumed by dog poo, especially on a hot day, the “heavily trafficked” amounted to about 50 people in a 4 hour span, going and coming

Logistics: clean pit toilet at trailhead; parked at lower; 8.7 miles is what I registered round trip from that location

pretty shady and a stream nearby for 90% of walk so really good one for dogs. pretty easy. took 2.5 hrs with some jogging but also some dog stream play.

We went to hike this trail today (10 July 2018) and found that it is closed for an unknown time because of the 416 fire. A Park Ranger was there preventing parking at the trail head and hiking the trail. I gave it one star because I had to give a star to make the review.

We stumbled in to this trail and Did not expect much but wow it was really good. You have to pop into the stream it's electric!

Easy to find and well trafficked trail. I recommend going early to beat the crowds and mountain bikers. View from the top of the trail is well worth the elevation gain. If I lived in Durango, I’d make this trail a regular.

The hike up to Gudy's nest was lovely. Went the day the trail opens (4/16) and it was perfect. Finding the trail head was easy & experiencing the San Juan Forest so close to town was a happy surprise. This is a must-do hike if you're staying in Durango. Green, not too strenuous, birds, deer, a few friendly hikers & their canine companions, and a calming river. It checks off all my boxes for sure! (*go during the week)

Great hike. Great way to get used to the elevation because it’s not a crazy amount of elevation gain but there are lots of flat stretches to regain your breath! I recommend to anyone looking for a day hike that ends in a great little spot for lunch or simply reflection.

Nice hike but VERY busy with hikers and many bikes!!!
Entire trail is in the trees which is great for the heat. The last mile plus is switchbacks. They are very good. Trail is well marked and the views from Gudy's Rest is nice but not overwhelming!
Close to Durango makes it a plus and minus due to volume!

The view at Gudy's Rest is FANTASTIC! Left early from the lower parking lot. Great shade and no crowds on a Wed morning. Really enjoyed walking within earshot of the running creek water. Did not come across a lake as stated in the description. Would do it again if I wasn't leaving tomorrow.

This is a great hike. There is pretty good cover most of the time which helped keep it cool for the climbing.

Excellent trail! It was my wife's first hike at age 56. We did the whole 8.2 miles in just over five hours. Also included a picnic lunch at the top while enjoying incredible views. Highly recommend it.

Great hike up the very beginning of the Colorado Trail. It follows Junction Creek for the first 3 miles or so and then climbs three huge switchbacks to finally reach Gudy's Rest; a large seat and fabulous viewpoint. The path is narrow and dusty in places and is popular with dog walkers and mountain bikers so keep your eyes open. Its great for kids and fishermen too as the river/creek is accessible at numerous points. Allow four hours.

Weather was perfect but there is still snow down low in the shade. There is one drainage crossing before the bridge that was a little treacherous but still would recommend the hike.

Excellent trail. Did it on March 16th so still a few patches of snow/ice on the ground which made it even more interesting for us Texans. You walk along the creek for about half of the trail. This time of the year had a nice volume of water coming down the mountain.
The view at the end of the trail is amazing. Highly recommend if you are in Durango.

Best day hike close to Durango. First part is along the creek. Lots of shade and moderate terrain. The last couple miles before Gudy's Rest area is somewhat steep switch backs but very manageable. Spectacular views from Gudy's. We hiked in a Friday so it was light traffic but see it getting busy on weekends.
