The trail starts at a slow, but steady rise for 3/4 of the trail. We went about 9am on a Tuesday in July. It was hot and humid (having rained the day before). Fairly quiet, easy for 65+ crowd. Near the tops, 2 planes came out and kept circling - so the noise was now annoying vs. quiet and serene. There were lots of flies at about half point and further up. We think this trail will be good after the first frost (getting rid of the flies). Did not take the Columbine Trail loop, but may next time.

From the top of the Columbine Trail you can head west to the Lyons Back Trail for a great vista and connection with JeffCo Open Space trails.

Good hike close to Denver. There is an option for some elevation on the Columbine Trail. Will be doing it again.
