This trail is not very well marked and the signs can be confusing. You can easily do this hike in one day if you leave early enough and bring food!
This trail was pretty great today. A little muddy in some spots but a pretty easy trail. The dog came with us today and loved scrounging around on this trail. We did fun into a bear and 2 coyotes about 3 miles in but after the scare it was still a beautiful trek.
We completed this during a three-day trip with Pawnee Pass. it was lovely. There was a bit of snow on the shady part of the mountain even though it was August. Beautiful flowers, mushrooms, rivers, and falls.
Average hike. Their is a river at the beginning, and then no water features after that. We went in about 1 1/2 miles and turned around.
Gradual uphill from the trailhead up a 4WD road for a little over 3 miles (trail and 4WD road split and come back together at one point) to the wilderness boundary. More uphill from there to the top of the pass. Beautiful views from the pass, and very windy. The summit of Sawtooth Mountain (12,304') is a short walk up from the pass, and offers even better views. The trail has a decent amount of elevation gain, but being over the course of more than 6 miles it is pretty manageable for most people. A friend got lost on the way back to the car, so pay attention to where the trail forks at the wilderness boundary - a map is a good idea.
Biked up Buchanan Pass trail to wilderness boundary. Long gradual climb, Long fun downhill back down. Loads of hikers. Be respectful! You can't get going too fast going back down. But the views are fantastic! Watch for Moose!
Long hike. NIce sunny day. Plenty fo scenery.
