Getting There

The relatively flat but still challenging Mesa Trail spans a beautiful area of the amazing landscape just below the flatirons and foothill peaks - the views just don’t quit. This is a longer hike if you choose to take on the entire trail, but a few different trailhead options along the way make it very customizable. Pro tip: the northern half can be pretty busy with hikers and trail runners while the half closer to El Dorado/South Mesa trailhead is often much quieter.

Colorado Tourism Office, 1625 Broadway, Suite 1700 , Denver, CO, 80202, Phone: 800-COLORADO

From Denver, north on 93, left on 170 just south of Boulder. A mile or two to parking on the left.

FYI - The Mesa Trail was officially rerouted near the N Fork Shanahan Trail on 9/26 primarily for erosion concerns. Previously you could choose to take the old/new route before it officially opened. Just follow the signs. Stay on the trail though, worker on the new section ran into a Mountain Lion (~1mi off trail).

really liked this trail!! the only downside was at the beginning there were a ton of people near the trailhead but once you get on the actual mesa trail there’s a lot less traffic. there’s a lot of parking but it’s almost always full so would recommend going earlier in the morning to beat the rush. i didn’t do the whole trail, i hiked about 3.5 miles and then turned around and went back to get almost 7 miles out and back. really liked the variety of steepness on the trail, really got a good workout in

I liked the scenery a lot, although it was very hilly for a runner. I did 7.5 miles of the trail, doing it south to north plus McClintock. It was very sunny, especially because it’s summer. Shade was limited. I really really liked the nature and how it went low and then higher up so you could get different perspectives of town. I also loved how it passed over all of these different trails to explore: I thought that was very cool.

It is a great trail and I highly recommend this trial because the pictures that I got of the view we are 30 miles away from Denver and you could see it clear as the sky was on the trail

Today was beautiful, trails were dry and we saw 8 deer up close. Today is definitely a great day for a hike.

Backpacking

Hiked this from north to south then back today (5/1/2020). Started about 8am. Was relatively crowded by 10am but the southern end of the trail tends to be less crowded. Last mile or two before turn around point is just a wide dirt path to a parking lot with various other trail heads. Trail in good shape for the most part. Exposed to sun half the time, bring hat or sun screen.

On the way back to NCAR we passed three rattlesnakes. All right next to the trail and all were rattling. Be careful!
