The relatively flat but still challenging Mesa Trail spans a beautiful area of the amazing landscape just below the flatirons and foothill peaks - the views just don’t quit. This is a longer hike if you choose to take on the entire trail, but a few different trailhead options along the way make it very customizable. Pro tip: the northern half can be pretty busy with hikers and trail runners while the half closer to El Dorado/South Mesa trailhead is often much quieter.

Today was beautiful, trails were dry and we saw 8 deer up close. Today is definitely a great day for a hike.

Hiked this from north to south then back today (5/1/2020). Started about 8am. Was relatively crowded by 10am but the southern end of the trail tends to be less crowded. Last mile or two before turn around point is just a wide dirt path to a parking lot with various other trail heads. Trail in good shape for the most part. Exposed to sun half the time, bring hat or sun screen.

On the way back to NCAR we passed three rattlesnakes. All right next to the trail and all were rattling. Be careful!

Logged 13 miles with 2,750 ft elevation gain. Completed in about 7 hours. Patches of ice in a few spots. I'd rate this more on the strenuous side due to the length and all the ups and downs in both directions. Views of the mountains are good, but not excellent. Went on a weekday and it wasn't busy.

Lots of branches, constantly checking the map to make sure I was on the right trail.

Only went 1 way. Beautiful trail we had a little trouble finding the start but otherwise very well marked. Great views especially on the downhill at the end. Decent amount of shade and not overly crowded either. It is a fair moderate rating for 1 direction.

Obviously doing this hike on 4th of July weekend was a bit crowded. But, few people are actually doing the 13 miles, so when you get far enough, there are few people on the trail. Was a great trail for inclines and then quick reliefs. Suggest hitting the trail no later than 7Am to get done around noon (Hiking speed) . Enjoy !!!

In the summer the first two miles can be very hot, so start early and wear sunscreen. You don't really get any shade those first two miles. After you're in the shade it's much more enjoyable.
