Getting There

This hike is a must-do if you're in the Vail area! Situated just off I-70, allot 2-3 hours for this hike, depending on your fitness level. The trail can be very steep, but it is on the moderate site of hard in summer and fall. In the winter this is a challenging route which should only be attempted by experienced mountaineers. The area offers incredible views of rivers, valleys, untouched forests, and steep rocky peaks. In the fall visitors will see beautiful leaf colors. This trail enters the Eagles Nest Wilderness. Wilderness regulations exist and are posted at the trailhead. Parking is very limited at this trailhead. Please consider taking the free Town of Vail bus from the Vail Village parking structure to access this trail. The Booth Lake Trail is a very popular hike and the amount of use has resulted in trail damage and widening. Please stay on the trail, carry all trash and dog waste out with you, and leave this beautiful place better than you found it so others may continue to enjoy.

There are no restrooms at the trailhead.

White River National Forest: (970)-945-2521

The trail can be very steep so this is not ideal for children. Many users have mentioned that using poles was very helpful on this trail. The parking area is small, so make sure to get there early on the weekends! Although the area is forested, the sun beams down above the treeline, so bring suncreen!

About 3 miles east of Vail, take the exit for the I-70 Frontage Road, and then take a left onto Booth Falls Road.

Definitely a good little hike. Although, it’s rated hard, I would say it’s more moderate. Anyone can do it, just take your time & watch your step. Bring plenty of water & snacks. The views are well worth it. The waterfalls are so refreshing. Enjoyed it as did my 12 year old son. A must see if visiting Vail, Co.

A moderately difficult trail. The first portion is steep but then gets better until the lady 1/4 mile sick is steep, rocky steps. We enjoyed the shade provided in the morning. It was 3 hours round-trip, stopping at the falls to enjoy the power of the water, and roughly 5 miles out and back.

Gorgeous trail with a rewarding waterfall at the end. Definitely more moderate than hard, there is a steep incline for most of the trail and a few places where you have to traverse a small creek and climb over some rocks. Plenty of overflow parking at 8:30am on a Friday, and not many people on the way up...started getting VERY crowded by 11am. Trail is a good mix of shaded and sunny.

Booth falls One of the best hikes we have ever been on! Recommendations: get there early if possible especially in the summer, trail is perfect with a light jacket or long sleeve shirt, views are spectacular, and plenty of shade. Bring a walking or hiking stick, it is very helpful on the way up. We took our time on the way up and stopped when heart rate climbed too high. Views are amazing and diverse from valleys to rivers, streams, to aspen tree Groves, to Pinetree‘s, to wildflowers, to multiple rocks, moss, plenty of vegetation and wildlife. Trail is kept very well approximately 2 to 3 feet wide at most places, plenty of rocks to use as stair steps on the way down, very few places that are slippery, plenty of erosion control measures taken on the trail. Best to wear shoes with plenty of grip, trail climbs decently at beginning, levels out a bit towards the middle and is much steeper towards the falls, but well worth every moment! It can be kid friendly if you take your time and take plenty of breaks and snacks.

This was a great hike. Started at 7:15 am, only saw one other group on the way up at that hour. Took us about 2 1/2 hours round trip. Lots more folks coming up on our way down, definitely go early so you can park and b/c this is a highly trafficked trail. The falls are beautiful and worth the climb. Wide variety on the way up...some pines, some aspen groves and some open meadow with wild flowers. I can understand why this hike is so popular. Pretty rocky in some places but on the way down lots of the rocks are almost like stair steps. We brought our poles and that was definitely a good call too.

I really enjoyed this hike! It is rated hard but I would say it’s moderate. Lots of beautiful aspen trees and wildflowers. I would do this hike again.

Wasn’t too bad for someone with sea level lungs. I’d say a good start to a trip. Really wasn’t too busy. Beautiful hike almost got ran over by a deer.

this is a beautiful trail - a lot of aspen trees and wild flowers. a good hike for out of state visitors that might challenge them a bit. allocate 2.5 hours to the falls and back. enjoy :)

Great trail. More challenging than I remembered. Warmer than expected too. Very crowded for the 4th of July weekend.

Somewhat challenging afternoon hike. Significant elevation gain. Glad we brought our hiking poles. Perfect weather. Falls and even downstream were beautiful. (App only recorded 1/2 my hike but out and back was roughly 4.5 miles)

Great trail. Starts off pretty steep, but then peters out towards the middle. Last quarter of a mile is super steep and rocky, but it was all worth it

Took us about 3 hours - we stayed to take some photos at the falls, so you could do it in 2.5 probably if you don’t want to spend much time on photos. Challenging incline but it’s manageable. Very pretty falls!

Was quite surprised by how much I loved this trail. The views at the falls and of Vail Canyon are phenomenal. I would recommend going down to the water and sticking your feet in. There is a ton of elevation gain but well worth it.

Got to the parking lot at 7:45 and it was almost full. Really beautiful especially in the morning before the suns made it over the mountain. Great hike to the falls, I think it should be a moderate rating.

Arrive lot 7:00am on plenty of parking. Snowed all the way to Falls. Cold, fun hike. Had planned to go to lake but the snow was building so we stayed at the Falls and headed back. Sun broke out on return, wow - really beautiful hike and the weather kept folks away so peaceful and enjoyable. Loved it, look forward to coming back and heading back to the lake.

Awesome trail to the falls. Decent cover for most of the trail. Hard to see the water going up to it bc of how overgrown it is in some places. However, the waterfall is incredible. Was able to safely get in the water a bit and take some pictures at the edge. Pretty packed on a Sunday. Parked at the school down the hill in the overflow. Would do again but would go all the way to the lake.

Decided to take a day trip to Vail today. I was a bit timid since this trail is labeled as “hard”, but don’t let that fool you! Most of the hike is really easy. It’s a little uphill but also a lot of neutral areas. The hardest part of this trail is the last .25 miles (give or take) to get to the top. The incline is quite steep and does involve rock climbing. Be careful coming down that area as well!! It was muddy and if you don’t have hiking shoes you can easily slip. I recommended coming early. Since it is one of Vail’s most famous hiking trails, it was packed. If you’re concerned about social distancing due to COVID, going on this trail will be tough since it is heavily trafficked. Overall it was a great trail and I can’t wait to do it again!
