Reservations to enter the park will go on sale through Recreation.gov at 8 a.m. Mountain Time on Thursday, May 28. Reservations will be available to enter the park from June 4 through July 31. The next release will be on July 1, for the month of August and any remaining days that have not been booked for July. On August 1, reservations will be available for the month of September and any remaining days that have not been booked for August. On September 1, reservations will be available for the month of October and any remaining days in September that have not been booked. Permits issued using the reservation system will allow park visitors to enter the park within two-hour windows of availability between 6 a.m. through 5 p.m. This process will facilitate advance payment of entrance fees, minimize contact between park entrance station staff and visitors and limit congestion in parking lots. The permit system will apply to all areas of the park. In the initial opening phase, the park will open approximately 60 percent of the park’s maximum parking capacity or 4,800 vehicles (13,500 visitors) per day. A wonderful hike in Rocky Mountain National park. Use Bear Lake as the trailhead, the Lake Bierstadt trailhead is too steep and has no shade. You can do this as an out and back, or if you want to do it as a point-to-point there is a shuttle that will take you back to Bear Lake.

HikingGreat!

Great hike. Very glad we took suggestion to start from Bear Lake. The first .3 mile was up hill and rocky, but after that it was downhill. We made a mistake when we took the loop lake and didn't go all the way around. We ended up taking a trail that led to the Park and Ride. We had to take an additional 1.4 miles trail back to Bierstadt parking lot. We would definitely recommend this hike as the lake was beautiful. People before us said a moose was hanging around but we didn't see it.

Nice hiking for my first of the year. Trail was dry and in good repair. Started at 7:30 and saw only 20 or so hikers in 3 hours. Bear Lake lot was full by 10:30. Always best to go early even on weekdays.

We were the only ones on the trail, it was super windy but once you were in the trees very well blocked. Very peaceful and beautiful. Needed snowshoes, trail was well marked by park rangers! Hike itself was easy and fun!

Icy today after last night’s freezing temps and today’s snow. This hike has a smAll amount of uphills that require some exertion, then levels off for most of the hike. The lake is frozen over today but the falling snow makes everything beautiful!

Easy hike for all levels. Blue blue sky today. Ducks at Bierstadt; Canadian geese at Sprague. Encourage all hikers to walk around the lake .

Hiked from 0430 until 0630 started from Bear Lake. Trail is decent, it's not overly difficult. A few stretches where you have to watch your footing but nothing extreme. Trail is nice and quiet, you just don't get to see much of the mountain until you get to the next lake. Overall it's about a 2.0 mile hike there and 2.0 miles back (total 4.0 miles).

Great hike. Went from Bear Lake to Lake Bierstead. A bit of elevation for the first 1/2 mile or so then relatively flat. Beautiful trail through the woods. Once we reached Lake Bierstead there was a moose bathing and eating in the middle of the lake! Amazing! Very steep walk down to the trailhead but it had beautiful wildflowers all over the hill and great views.

We just randomly did this hike thinking it was just some easy walk and not many scenic views...I WAS SOOO WRONG. ITS BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL. The hike was very very easy. Don’t listen to the haters, I’ve done Chasm Lake, Royal Arch, Gem Lake, and the like. This place is just as beautiful, just a shorter condensed stroll that’s super fun. On the switchbacks up from the trailhead (we came from bear lake) to the lake turn around and look at the mountains so beautiful.

Snowshoeing

Hiked this route 2/24/19. Entire route is in the woods which was good this morning with the low temps and high winds. The only significant views are at Bear and Bierstadt Lakes. Forest is pretty and pleasant to snowshoe. Could hike without snowshoes but there are some soft/deep spots once in a while...several feet deep if you step even one foot off trail. Quick and easy hike so okay for the winter when the forecast above treeline is bad but not challenging enough to mess with otherwise.

We started at bear lake until we got to Bierstadt. It was an okay hike but not one of our favorites in the RMNP.

Drove 2 hours, got to the park entrance, paid $25 for day pass, drove a mile to the lake and was greeted with 'The lake is full, you'll have to turn around and go somewhere else' by a park ranger on the side of the road....no further explanation, just gestured to turn around. The great outdoors is full - go somewhere else. So I did.

Nice hike with the family, very easy. A lot of horse poop on the trail, so 4 stars. We tried to park at Bear Lake at 7:30am but parking lot was full. Once we took the shuttle, start time was 8:30am.

This trail was peaceful and mostly isolated. The wide, serene lake at the end makes up for any lack of epic vistas along the way.

Hiked in November; definitely recommend snowshoes for that time of year. We ended up having to turn around before making it to Flattop because if the deep snow. Otherwise beautiful.

This was my first Colorado snowshoe adventure in 2018 and I think about it often. I will be returning this winter for sure. Bierstadt Lake was frozen over and we were able to walk out and soak in some sun and beautiful views.

Perfect Winter afternoon hike to kick off 2018! We were fortunate with conditions: blue skies and clear, cold but not bitter, snowy but not icy trail that was well compacted, enough parking at Bear Lake TH, and not many people past Bear Lake itself. We only required our winter boots and attire, no snowshoes or traction, even with carrying the 1 and 2 year olds. We ice skated on Bierstadt! :). Excellent day with friends!!!

Peaceful trail, saw nobody once we left Bear Lake. Strongly advise that you wear traction; there's a lot of ice on the trail.

The hike to the Lake Beirstadt is fairly easy to moderate. The lake is so beautiful with amazing views of the mountains. A great spot to have lunch.
