Great time with my sons (ages 8 and 11). Good distance for kids. It was not crowded going up (started before 7:30am) but on the way down it got crowded. Trail is in good shape. We saw a black squirrel playing on the cliffs. Kids stayed engaged with the views, flowers, rocks, wildlife, etc.

The route up to the Rock and it's summit is mostly Snow and Ice free as of 4/20/20. The back West Ridge Trail is about ankle deep snow, but not terrible. The descent on the south part is mostly just mud. You don't need spikes if its warm out, but when I went at around 7am the snow was frozen solid and I used my Spikes. Did not get to do the valley section because that snow wore me out. Highly recommend this hike as either an easy summer hike or a moderately difficult winter hike.

Gorgeous views. Varied terrain. Requires solid effort. What more could you want?! Did this loop as a trail run and thoroughly enjoyed. The reason for 4 and not 5 stars is the fact that you have to share some of the trail (not the Arthur’s Rock part) with mountain bikes, but everybody was polite. Day fee is 9 dollars per car. Worth every cent! Perfectly dry, great conditions.

Bring sunscreen and plenty of water! I did this loop counterclockwise. Arthur’s Rock Trail is a well populated trail. I arrived at 8:30am and the upper parking lot was almost full. It took about 50 minutes to reach the summit of Arthur’s Rock. Timber Trail / Westridge Trail have less people traveling on it. The trees create a nice break from the direct sun. These are multi use trails and I did see a handful of mountain bikers however, I had Westridge practically to myself (only passed one other person). Howard Trail / Mill Creek Link Trail winds you down variety of switch backs where you can enjoy a plethora of wildflowers getting closer to the reservoir. You can easily truncate this loop into a 6.5 mile outing by eliminating the South Valley Loop section. The valley though is very pretty and extremely mellow, so it’s a nice add if you’re looking for the extra mileage. I also tacked on Shoreline Trail, just a quick little trail but that is the closest to the reservoir that you can get during the loop. All in all, I had a fantastic morning exploring this Colorado State Park! RT it took me 4 hours and AllTrails recorded 10.5 total miles.
