Easy off road trail. We live here half the year, so we give directions in this area a lot

The beginning of the trail is very open and not much to look at (starting at the south end). However, as the trail goes north it gets more interesting. We took an offshoot to the Mammoth Gulch Reservoir which has plenty of camping. The ghost town of Apex seemed unfriendly(a lot of posted signs) so we turned around and didn’t check it out.

Confirmed from Andrews experience. Went today and didn’t get very far after that first big switchback. Don’t get stuck, wait a few mor weeks!

Update May 28. Road is free of snow and was a great ride up to Dakota Hill! Took moon and gamble on the way back down to Rollins. Recommended!

Headed up April 14th 2018 through Apex road, made it after the switchback and a little up the road there was a turn around followed by another snow cover unmaintained road. We headed up the snowy road for about .25-.5 miles. Got stuck in a snow drift and had to call AAA to come pull us out. 8 hours later we made it out. Tow truck had lots of trouble even with chains getting up to where we were. I m the dummy for not waiting.

very mellow, just a dirt road really. you can cut a couple switchbacks short and these are steep but easy climbs. not many real obstacles around. didn't realize this is where moon gulch pops out and so we went to gamble, which has insane views. went by the shaft house and just headed downhill at every intersection from there. i have a moon and gamble gulch video up at:

Nice scenic road, leads up to back side of Pickle Gulch trail. Pretty drive up to see the snow today!

The people who say this is a boring, easy trail clearly didn't get off the main road. When you do, there are many, many amazing trails of varying difficulty to explore. We were in the keep for hours and never even got close to the top of the main road! We are going back again to explore the area some more!

Just a dirt road. Nothing of interest. Lots of private land. Would recommend changing rating to "easy".

Fun, relatively easy to drive trail that gets steeper towards the end. There were a couple little offshoots that were a little more technical. Overall took about an hour to go up and back

just a compacted dirt road leads to private residence nothing special. towards the end (pass a gate) there is a little hill that can be climbed and over looks the valley below. overall nothing special.

The Apex Trail system leads you into an amazing group of trails that can keep you exploring for days. The system can bring you into fine fisheries such as Loch Lomond Lake with thousands of great camping areas.I have seen reviews stating the "Apex is typical country gravel road" but the writer of that doesn't have a clue as to what the trail system has to offer. There are at least six entrances into the trail system that lead you in with spectacular views, wildlife and photography opportunities with some real fun off road excursions. The difficulty of the trails are not more than a 3-4 on a 1-10 scale but there are some nice water crossings and other enjoyable spots as well. The overall beauty and fun along with the miles and miles of trails make me give it a 5 Star rating with a must do for everyone!!!

Was just a typical country gravel road. Great site seeing trip. If your looking for 'off road' try another trail.

An easy dirt road for just about any SUV when it is dry. From Central City, take Apex to Bald Mountain Rd. and go east to Alice and the St. Mary's Glacier. Don't forget to stop at the cemeterys along the way.

Great starter trail. I took my 2008 Ford Escape 2WD on this trail and had no problem, in fact it was a little too easy. Beautiful views and just a great day trip for families. Definitely suggest taking the left onto Elk Park Rd, there are two sections with steep inclines that are pretty good (highlight of trip). Overall nice and easy.
