TONS of mountain bikes, on thin trails. And they are going fast downhill, over some moderate to difficult terrain. I had to step out of the way of mountain bikers dozens of times. And I went early, too - got to the trail at 7:30am. The bikers were all very polite and super nice, though. It’s just the nature of this trail system!

One of my closer to home favorites. Start on the Apex trail and you follow a little stream, which is great for my dogs to cool off if needed! From the apex trail you can catch a couple other trails, pick n sledge or sluicebox, there are a couple other trails you can decide to go on from those trails if you want also. Sounds kind of confusing but thankfully there is a map with a “you are here” point to help at some of the trail heads. What’s cool is that you can make this hike longer or shorter depending on what you’re looking for. I do this hike in the mornings, arrive at 8am, not too crowded and you get more shade at that time compared to mid day.

A nice little hike. Trail is well established and blazed. I definitely recommend adding in enchanted forest portion of this series of trails.

WARNING TO HIKERS AND COMMENT TO RECENT REVIEW WRITTEN BY A HIKER. PLEASE STAY OF APEX TRAILS ON EVEN NUMBERED DAYS. Yes, if you were out hiking Apex on an even numbered day you probably did come across a lot of bikers that were annoyed you were hiking. Specially if you were hiking up The Enchanted Forest which is basically a down hill mountain bike trail on even numbered days. I am and avid hiker and biker with 3 small children that have been enjoying Apex for 25 years and it blows my mind every time I'm at Apex biking and I see hikers on this trail on an even numbered day when there are 500 plus mountain bikers riding. Apex park is the number one busiest mountain bike park on any even numbered day(even on a Monday). It is the worst place for anyone to hike on an even numbered day. Odd numbered days are for hiking and bikers can only use the trail directional up hill and must exit at the top(no down hilling allowed). For this reason very few bikers use Apex on odd numbered days and the few that do go are riding up hill slower than a hiker can walk it so there are no issues. As a hiker we basically have the entire park to ourselves on odd numbered day so we can hike in groups with our packs, kids, dogs, cats' and everything but the kitchen sink that clog up this narrow, rocky technically challenging trail making passing each other challenging at times. Apex park is probably the most heavily used trail in the Jeff Co park system and gets way too much use to have bikers and hikers on the same day. I honestly don't know why Jeff Co doesn't just make Apex hiking only on odd days and Biking only on even days like they do with some of their other parks like Centennial Cone. With the odd day directional limitations to bikers, the bikers are basically giving those days to hikers to have use of the park so maybe the courtesy thing for hikers to do is stay off Apex and The Enchanted Forest on even numbered days when you can clearly see the parking lot is full and over flowing with mountain bikers.

This is a gorgeous hike! I’d say a tad on the easy side actually. This is one you definitely want layers as you’re in and out of sunny spots and the shaded areas get chilly fast. Very dog friendly, lots of mountain bikes but on odd-days they’re going one-way only. We did it sledge to apex, which made the back half mostly downhill and enjoyable.

Great conditions, dry throughout. Great views of Golden, Denver, North Table Mountain, etc. however, it is heavily biked, which means as a hiker you’ll be stepping aside constantly.

Lots of mountain bikers to look out for but a great hike regardless

I went clockwise from Apex to Sluice Box to Plough. I liked Apex best (most ice, FYI), so next time might do that as an out and back. Overall, very nice, close to town, and - because of the time (2pm Sat), snow, and clouds - I saw very few other hikers and only two mountain bikes.
