my hiking partner wanted to kill me climbing a frickin mountain. I be tired. was amazing views. little to no shade, though.
This trail was definitely more intermediate level. The first 3.5 miles was all up hill. There’s not really any shade. Watch out for the beards of cows and I was always dodging the cow pies. But it was a great hike, beautiful views, and a great workout!
I did Los Huecos to Halls Valley loop counterclockwise but didn’t see that route listed. Although the views are stunning, the hills are straight up, one after another and nearly killed my quarter horse and me when I got off to walk/climb. Maybe good for getting your endurance horse in shape. Not a lot of shade, mainly pasture hillside. This is the Trail with the sign “Steep downhill Control your Speed” if you are biking down it. Much preferred Halls Valley Trail with more trees, creek, more gradual hills.
I can’t really tell you about the whole loop because my friend and I went two miles and then turned around and went back. We were supposed to do the McCreery Lake trail, but it was closed due to flooding, so we did Los Huecos instead. What I CAN tell you is if you start at the parking lot and go clockwise, the trail will be all uphill for two miles after the lake. Oh, and the wildflowers were beautiful in April.
