Getting There

This is the less trafficked approach from the east to the top of Woodson Mountain, where you'll find the famous Potato Chip rock. In the summer, be sure to take enough water, it gets extremely hot and dry! The views to the ocean and to Palomar Mountain to the East are worth the effort.

There is a longer but more gradual way to the top, via Lake Poway that is more often travelled - https://alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mt-woodson-via-lake-poway-trail

A good workout for sure, and the views up top are fantastic. Not enough people wearing masks though :-/

Steady incline all the way up. Mostly paved trail. End is lots of radio towers. Potato chip is a bit smaller than I expected. Lines for selfies on the rock. Okay hike. Bit touristy

Great trail, started at 445AM and the Chip to ourselves. Perfect timing because on the way down we probably pass up another 100 hikers going up. View is amazing in the morning, i can’t imagine the view during sunset

Great trail up to Mt. Woodson and the iconic Potato Chip Rock. Despite being all uphill, this hike was easier than I thought. Sunscreen and or a hat is highly recommended, since there is no shade and the sun is on you almost the entire time. When I got up there, there was a line to get on Potato Chip, (not an actual one) so be prepared to wait for a minute or two. Yo get into Potato Chip, you have to climb a boulder, then jump onto Potato Chip Rock (when I say jump i don’t mean 2 inches). The jump is a little scary, maybe a 5ish feet, but all you have to worry about is having sturdy shoes and falling backwards. Once you do the jump, you’re on Potato Chip and you can start your poses, but if you slip when you jump, all that’s going to happen is your feet are going to slip and stop on a rock. It’ll make a lot more sense when you’re there. Just saying, but all this information might not be totally accurate or make sense, I’m a 12 year old after all!

Ok I don’t know why it’s rated moderate. Honestly I found it to be hard. Although it’s only a 4 mile hike it’s all steep uphill On the way up and steep downhill on the way down

Great hike. However, it is all paved asphalt so if you plan to bring a dog you will want to early or it gets hot fast for them. Nice consistent gradual incline the whole way.

Tough all uphill! But not too long. Enough shade spots to stop and rest.

HikingGreat!No shade

we started the hike at 4am got to the tip at 5am. we stopped multiple times but they were minute breaks. we decided we wanted a sunrise picture and beat the heat. once you hit the payment part of the trail it is all up hill from there. you park on the side of the road along the highway. to take the famous picture you do have to do a nice jump or have help to get safely to the other side. by the time we started to head down it started to get super busy on the trail and a bunch of the parking is taken up.

Good Workout Trail. Definitely come early to beat the heat. Running shoes did us just fine. We arrived around 6 with no one at the potato chip.

Great hike! We took the backway which is cemented but more steep compared to the front way (lake side). I recommend going early because it gets really hot and packed. Check out my vlog of our hike! YOUTUBE LINK: https://youtu.be/sbbic3DO25c

What an awesome hike! We parked our car along HWY 67 around 0915 and began our journey. This is the shortest version of the hike but DAMN it’s steep. It took us 1:38 to get to Potato Chip but well worth it. My 7 and 8 year olds were troopers dealing with the little amount of shade. Line to take pictures was about 30 min. Recommend getting out there early before it gets too hot!

A heavily trafficked paved trail. There was a line to take a photo at potato chip rock. Steep uphill hike pretty much the whole way to the rock but after that the way back is a breeze.

The initial climb is all uphill until you get to the potato chip rock. Relatively wide paved road the entire way. You don’t notice the crowd as much until there’s a long line of people lined up to take a photo at the rock. Not Covid friendly. Do NOT bring your dog. We watched a dog slip and get wedged between two boulders as ppl tried to get it out for 30mins +.

First time here!!! Finally made it. Awesome short hike but steep, good for beginers to built condition. started after 7am, just few hikers up and down and no line to take the famous pics on the "potato chip" rock. Next time I will use the Poway side
