Wood Road, Castillero Trail, Mine Trail Loop is a 4.9 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near New Almaden, California that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from April until September. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Really quiet given it was a Sunday afternoon and the first weekend of the new year. I expected to see more people on the trail. It’s a nice 5 mile loop with shaded and exposed parts. Great views, and not too many hills. It was cool to stumble across various mine entrances and historical mining landmarks. I found I needed to review the map a few times since there are quiet a few trail junctions.
Really pretty, great views throughout. Some hills but much easier than Alum Rock.
Beautiful panoramic views of Mt. Um, the bay, and all the way down to Morgan Hill. Moderate elevation change. The trail is very wide and easy/safe to pass by people. The trail also has great historical spots from the old quicksilver mining settlement. One of my favorites in the South Bay .
Great hike! First part is very hot and sunny, last half is very cool and shaded. Whole hike is beautiful! Bring water and a friend!
Nice wide trail with some good mountain and valley views. Can also see some old mining facilities. First part of the trail is mostly unshaded, so it can get really hot, though the loop portion is well-shaded. Unfortunately also had too many annoying flies that buzz around you.
Ran this trail. If you’re looking for an easier elevation change, go clockwise as you enter the mill area. Otherwise head straight and you can really feel the burn and you gain elevation fairly quickly. Good hike, decent amount of shade.
