This is the primary trail into the heart of the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River. The trail drops steeply down a north facing flank of the canyon and eventually comes to a hiking bridge across the Tuolumne River at the confluence of Piute Creek. This area is a great place to camp (with a wilderness permit) overnight to enjoy the many swimming pools, waterfalls, big trees and mountain peaks. The trailhead has minimal parking and a permit is required from Yosemite National Park. Amtrak provides daily service to trailhead during the summer.

This area looks incredible on satellite imagery. It's one of the longer "trails down to a river" in the Sierra, but looks like access to a lifetime worth of canyons to explore.
