Enjoyed hiking this trail. The beginning, I feel, is the the hardest part. But there’s definitely hills throughout. Make sure to bring enough water and sunscreen even in December, the California sun is unforgiving. Overall enjoyable, and nicely challenging. Oh and don’t forget $5 for entrance fee!!

I didn't know that to get to the trails one had to pass through a locked gate. We were there early (6:15am) due to the heat expected that day. The gates were locked with no notice of when they might open. There was no street parking nearby to just walk through the gates to the hike start either. I'm sure it's a nice hike, but just be aware that you should check the Casper State Park site for hours (even as I write this, their website is down).

HikingNo shade

The first part was green and shady although once you get to the ridge, there is no shade at all. A few parts were quite steep but still accessible to anyone of general fitness. I did this hike twice... I loved it. Just make sure to wear bloody sunscreen. There is no shade for most of the hike! Both days we went was during intense heat...we were fine with hats, light clothing, lots of water, sunscreen, basic running/walking shoes and some food.

Fun trail, but the oak trail is no longer available and you have to stay on bell canyon all the way up to the star rise trail connection.

Interesting trail that rides the ridge between the park and Coto. There really is not a loop anymore. the Oak Trail segment is now closed. There was hardly anyone on the trail on Saturday. A couple of runners, a biker, and a boy scout troop. We went about an hour without running into anyone. Once on the ridge trail, you are exposed in the sun with little shade.

Most of this trail is exposed so go early in the morning or during cooler seasons. Also part of the lower loop is closed due to deadfall.

Fun trail that did while camping on a weekend and had some great views with tall grass valleys. When we hit the end of trail my girlfriend asked if I thought we could see out camp site and sure enough we had a direct view of our favorite campsite with all of our gear (and the squires trying to steel our food). Will do this hike next time we camp here as I like camping here a lot

This trails starts of on the fairly level "Oak Trail" winding through oak groves, then quickly ascends to the top of the West Ridge, meeting up with the "West Ridge Trail" (which is essentially a utility access road).. Also, it's worth mentioning that these trails are located in the "Caspers Wilderness Park" campground, off the Ortega HWY.

Great hike! Lots of interesting flora & if your quiet even some deer or cool local birds. My only advice is to keep an eye out along the trail for poison oak. Just remember "leaves of three let it be" & have fun!

The trail was great with some excellent views along the ridge. Some of the trail was washed out do to the weather so we hiked around for a further hike. Some water crossing but nothing difficult. Overall a great hike.
