I agree with the others - go uphill first and get some wonderful views of Anza Borrego. Then it’s an easy trail to follow to get into the wind caves and slot canyon. By ending with the slot canyon it’s much cooler than hiking uphill in full sun. This trail gets very busy. Lots of people in the Slots.

Slots and wind caves were awesome but the trail needs to be marked better. Most of the trail follows a sand wash but there is a place where the trail breaks from the wash and ascends. We missed the turn and followed the wash and got boxed in, requiring extensive backtracking. Pay attention!

The slot, which you hit if you go west (clockwise) from the starting point, is great for kids. There is a small scramble from the parking area down to the slot, and the slot continues west for about 1/2 mile. The wash opens up after the little side canyon on the right, so with kids you will want to backtrack to the parking area.
For adults, it is more fun to do the hike counterclockwise, going first to West Butte. The view from West Butte of the mountains and the Salton Sea is great. And after West Butte, you are pretty much going downhill all the way.
