The loop was not marked. If you stay on the Wall Street Mill trail, it takes you to the old mill. We just did the out and back hike.

This trail is not well marked at all, so I would recommend starting it counterclockwise as the Wall Street Mill portion of the trail is easier to follow than the Wonderland Wash. If you do follow the trail counterclockwise, there will be a cairn in the middle of the wash. Once you see that, take a left and it'll take you back to that decrepit pink building you saw at the beginning of the trail, and thus back to your car. For the most part, you can follow footprints to figure out if you're going the right way, but the getting lost allows you some time to explore the nearby cool domes, and scramble up some rocks if you're into that. The Wall Street Mill portion of the trail has a TON of Joshua trees at the beginning, so you can get your fill of those while you're here. The wash trail has a lot of interesting fauna and flora as well, and there's no shortage of geologically interesting rock formations along the way.

I would rate this hike easy to moderate. There aren't any trail markers (should have a track maybe). You do meet obstacles, but if you look right, left, and maybe behind you, it's not hard to see a way around any obstacles. I don't boulder, or scramble much, and I'm only an average older hiker, and I enjoyed the outing. It is a bit sandy, though not really annoying. The first mile or so was the most scenic and fun (just the right amount of challenge). Some of the more distant areas we were just bushwacking in the desert which was fun (didn't see any snakes, though max temp was only 70 degrees). I plan an exploring again in the area to see if there are other routes that I can follow in the wonderland of rocks! Would love to see another doable loop in the area.

Beautiful scenery and “off the beaten path” of typical Joshua Tree hiking. That said, definitely not easy as there is no marked trail most of the way and the middle part of the hike requires a significant amount of scrambling and climbing. Would do it again but be prepared: download the map before you go and get ready to be creative when it comes to following it.

Great little hike with my five year old. Through the wash and a lot of boulder scrambling. Amazing views and Rick formations.
