Be advised that Cone Peak Rd is sometimes closed at the intersection with Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd, which necessitates a 4mi hike along Cone Peak Rd to get to the trailhead. I picked this trail for my kids' first backpacking trip, figuring the 2.4 miles from the Vicente Flat trailhead to the campground was a perfect distance. The road closure foiled our plans. Our kids were wiped out by the time we hiked the 4 miles to the Vicente Flat trailhead so we camped there. Cone Peak Rd is an easy flat hike--a bit bland but with gorgeous scenery. Camping at the trailhead afforded views of a spectacular sunrise and sunset over valleys on either side of the saddle but the winds that night were ferocious. We never did make it down to the camp. We met other hikers planning the Cone Peak Trail who were also caught off guard by the road closure.
